64' Jeep Cj5 W/302

I had some time today, and it was really nice out, so I lined the whole inside of the tub...I used herculiner. Real nice stuff. pretty easy to work with. These are the seat brackets I made a few weeks back. They are fully welded in.

 

Damn, I'm either going to have to learn how to weld or I need you to come over and make me new motor mounts on my 59 for the Cherokee V6 that's in there now.

I fixed my front fenders, welded up some cracks in them, took out a couple of dents, and did a little more body work. Nothing too crazy. But I did paint most of the body with UPOL Raptor liner...My kids picked the color...Its a little bright, but I don't really care, thats what they wanted. I will be doing the grill, windshield, and hinges in black.

 

i would suggest a tap in the bolt holes the raptor will gum a bolt to breaking.

 

How much raptor liner did you use, looks good.

 

Thanks! So far only 2 24oz containers, I have 2 more blue left, and 2 black. Tomorrow I’ll be costing a bunch of parts, and should have some leftover. It covers pretty good, and since the Jeep isn’t very big it goes a long way.

 

Some more progress today...

 

Finished up the hood, and window frame a few days ago. Also wired up all of my lights...I ditched the factory wiring harness which was a disaster, and wired everything myself. I put the lights on relays, and they work great. Have indicators, and rear lights are all LEDs and work great. I put these bumpers back on that came with the truck, not a fan, and will modify them, but work for now.


Some things left to do...still need all of the parking brake stuff from handle, mount, cable, and clevis. I rebuilt the one on the transfer case so that parts done.

I found out that cylinders 7 and 8 are low on compression by quite a bit, and my oil is looking a little muddy, so Im going to pull that head and see whats up...Im thinking a blown head gasket, because all of the other cylinders are great. Jeep runs great despite the bad compression, but blows a lot of oil out of dipstick when beating on it...which im attributing to cylinders 7 and 8...so we'll see what happens with that.

Mount the battery correctly. I have everything to do it, but its low on my list.

Secure the rear tank better, its up, but not secrured left and right, so Im going to make tabs up secure it to the frame.

Add a few more body mounts, wipers, and some other little odds and ends. I have the headlight trim rings, but the PO painted them, so until I clean them up, it will stay like this.

I went back and looked, that is a monster!

 

Yeah, its a decent size tank, must be some generic square tank that the PO's found.

I pulled the head, and everything looked ok, the cylinders are all clean looking, no ridges. The head bolts around cylinders 7 and 8 seemed to be not as tight as the others. I changed the head gasket, and no change in compression. It was wishful thinking that would fix it. I did a leak down test, and massive amount of air coming out of the breather and dipstick hole, so the rings are shot....

With that being said, I will replace the rings...totally budget...I'm going to do it with the motor in, pull the pan, pull the pistons out, quick hone of the cylinders, connecting rod end bearings will get replaced as well, and I'll turn a blind eye to anything else I see...Roadkill style...lol. At the same time, I will look around for another motor to do a full rebuild....I know many will cringe at the thought of this, but it will be fine. lol

 

Well...couple of steps back.

had low compression on cylinders 7 and 8 And some major leak down so off come the heads. Found out pistons 5,7,and 8 had cracked rings, and 7 and 8 had broken ring lands.

so in the process of freshening you the engine now.

 

Going to do the timing cover gasket, and water pump while I’m at it as well.

honing the cylinders, taking off the ridge in the cylinders, and hopefully I’ll be good to go

 

Since you're that far in and it's not a roller cam block, you should probably investigate the cam and lifters too.

 

Yeah, the thought was there. Depends on my motivation level. Lol.

Hahahaha! Who knows how long it was sitting before I got this lil gem...of course it was running when parked so it should have been good to go. Lol.

I’ve already ridge reamed and flex honed each cylinder, installed new rings on the 6 good pistons, and installed them with new connecting rod bearings. Waiting on the two new pistons which should be here tomorrow and will get them in. Then onto the timing cover. I think I will be back up and running this weekend...well together...maybe running.

OMG, the cylinders are nice and "new" looking! those ball hones work really well
