Since being in the mountains and enjoying driving with the windshield down, I've left it down now back home. But the other day, I lifted it to check on something under the hood and saw red paint on the canvas welting and marks on the hood. How do you avoid that? I know my paint is worse because of the crystallizing, powdering, whatever as old paint. But someday when I get a paint job, I'd like to avoid that.

To me, thats part of the patina for properly enjoying and old Jeep.
Years back, an old-timer said he waxed the welting so it wouldn't rub through the paint. I never tryed that.

Only way I can think of is to leave the hood open.

These kinds of marks should be worn with the pride of actually using a classic vehicle.

I drive with my windshield folded down pretty much all the time, and had the same problem. Wanting to avoid repeating that after I got my Jeep repainted last year, I came up with a solution that isn't perfect visually speaking - but it does work, and is barely visible when driving with the windshield down.

I took short lengths of black rubber tubing and zip-tied the ends over the welting and brackets. The slight compression of the tubing when the windshield strap is engaged creates somewhat of a cushion where the tubing meets the hood. I haven't had any problem with the paint coming off onto the tubing, or any marks on the paint from it yet.

Following up on my last post above, I realized I could probably come up with a better solution than I had originally. Looking at other options for the bumper material, I came across this solid (vs. hollow, which I was afraid would have too much "squish") D-shaped .59" x .39" adhesive rubber weatherstripping that looked like it might work well:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SZ15TNK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

After blasting and repainting them, I attached the weatherstripping adhesive directly to the brackets, using split rivets like the originals (but with small stainless washers to prevent pull-through) in the two holes at the ends of the brackets. This at least somewhat resembles the original welting configuration, and should help the weatherstripping to stay stuck. As I often drive with my windshield down, I didn't put any rivets in the center portion of the brackets for obvious reasons. Hopefully the adhesive will hold up okay over time.

You could always put the bumpers on the hood like a 69-up Jeep.

Looks great. I always thought their design was a bit backwards. why do they have the latch to keep the hood open? It should be for latching the windshield down

I wouldn't be surprised it it was a specification from the government when designing the M38A1.
