Frame is ready for primer. Holes are filled and smoothed over, boxing plates are stitched in, and 99% of the surface rust is removed. I also welded a receiver hitch on the rear bumper. I was hesitant to lose the ground clearance, but I know I’ll use it more than I’ll hit it on rocks.

Make sure the hitch will still slide into the receiver. When I welded mine it was really tight. Heat did a little distortion.

Thanks. Yup, slides right in. Almost too loosely. Needs some east coast rust. :D

No you don’t. leave a hitch in around here in the winter will NOT come outBroke a frame chain with aframe machine once trying to pull one out ended up cutting the whole receiver off.

I realize that this is a real thing....... but it really baffles me. Hours of youtube entertainment. :watch:
I haven't taken the ball mount out of my receiver on the Tahoe in at least 5 years..... Still rattles around...... privileged life here on the west coast...:madwife:

My son borrowed my truck and used his trailer to haul some logs to a sawmill in June. I forgot about the hitch being in there. In October I had to hammer it out. Even in the summer stuff rusts.

I towed the van here, immediately took out the hitch. I know better. Also it will get stolen and before that I will smash my shin on it and throw it as far as I can. If it gets rusted in, i will go insane if I cant throw it.

I finished cleaning up the frame and all the accompanying bracketry. Spot blasted what I couldn’t reach with the knotted wire cup wheel, then wiped everything clean with mineral spirits. Now it’s supposed to drop to 15° with 50mph gusts. :susp: I was hoping to spray it outside. I guess this is getting put on hold for a bit.

Fire up the wood stove. Roll out into 47v6 style plastic tent, spray, roll back in.

It’s been snowing like crazy for the last 5 hours.
This might end up being the first time I’ve had to plow before Halloween.

I know you are painting it, but I still have to suggest galvanizing the frame. Sorry, it’s the rust belt in me speaking, I know....

It’s most likely going to be garage kept and a fair weather friend. Plus, I’m sure I’ll have it apart/re-building/upgrading it before rust becomes an issue.

I figured. I had so many jalopy, rotted out vehicles over the years that I now have an obsession with galvanizing. Even did 2 truck cabs so far. A Fleetstar IH and a F600. I should have kept the Fleetstar. V&S galvanizing in Lebanon PA acid dipped them and hot dip galvanized both. The guy was a nervous wreck about warping the cab, made me sign a waiver and everything.

My 2x5x1/4" CJ6 frame is galvanized. I don't even drive it in the salt! I hope it doesn't rot out in the garage. Lol

I cut up some old U-bolts to make some stiffeners/safety chain hooks/rock catchers.

Decisions were made on a frame color. I decided to go med/dark gray (Rustoleum Massey Ferguson implement gray with hardener) on the frame, frame brackets and steering box. I’ll go with a lighter gray for the cage.

I typically dread that part of a project. That’s usually when I find a weld I missed or an ugly grinding facet. On the other hand, paint also means that assembly comes next. Looks great!
