Maybe I now know what happened to those rollers between the input and mainshaft when I was about 19 years old! All the parts were good when I put it together, but three days later after a lot of beach miles, it got real hard shifting. The rollers were nearly welded to the shafts.

How many here have enough experience to give a definitive reply? Probably less than a handful.
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then ;)
Makes no never mind to me. I’ve made a good living off people who don’t believe those of us who make our living from this and try and pass on information, in some cases trade secrets, freely.
If it has worked for you, great. I wish all of you the best of luck when suddenly it doesn’t ;). The hard part for me is telling customers “sorry, that info you got off the internet was wrong and now your transmission or transfer case is scrap metal”. Especially one that is hard to impossible to get parts for.
This is one of the reasons I’m not here much any more. Tired of beating my head against the wall just to get a headache.

I have always used Vaseline, it has many uses, We put it in our hair, when I had Hair, put it on our Leather Jackets, our work boots, put it on our skin to protect it, so it was always available. I didn't know they made Transmission assembly grease. I do have Lock Tight engine assembly grease, though. Good Luck

Im not so sure I would use a brand called "lockTite" engine assembly grease! "Just use this stuff and your engine will be locked up tight, just like when you found in in the wrecking yard"!

If you read Novak's literature about rebuilding transmissions they emphasize very strongly the importance of using correct grease.
I have way too much time and money invested in my vehicles to risk failure in order to save a few bucks on grease.

Likely a responsible use of grease and not enough to prevent the oil's migration thru the passageways. Think of knuckle pudding how it has to be thin enough for everything to be happy.
I'm getting curious if vaseline has any worse failure rate than assembly lube.

True. Used just enough to hold everything in place.

Personally I’ve never used anything but vasolein. back when I had no grey hair an old timer( with grey hair) told me not to use grease he built all the transmission and engines in the first shop I worked at. My grandmother made it perfectly clear to respect my elders cause the lived that long I never doubted what he said and still respect anyone older than I am

I know I used the use Lubriplate for most assembly, both cranks on engines, and in transmissions. I know I would occasionally use wheel bearing grease for trans rollers because it held them better.
How does Lubriplate (the stuff on a squeeze tube, maybe #105?) rate for trans assembly?

Did the cold Vaseline for years - a few years ago I bought a tub of assembly lube and use it now. Never had any of our units burn up, but have seen some that did with grease. To Jp's point - most of those were people who caked it on and it was real thick stuff when I looked at what they used.

Granddad always used his 'thin grease' (whatever that was) on the tractors I remember working on as a kid. It was thinner stuff he kept in a white tub on the shelf by the bolts... Man that brings back memories - he turns 102 on Dec 7 :D
