Specifically removing the old seal. The rear in particular, since that is where the worst leak is, though I will most likely do both. Can it be removed and replaced with just the yoke out, or does the shaft housing need to be removed? Any tips or tricks appreciated. Ive watched several rebuild videos but they sort of gloss over this. Thanks in advance

I have used screwdrivers, small cold chisels and drywall screws with vise grips to pull them out. I think you can also double the seals. Look at your yoke, is it pitted or have a groove cut into it from the seal? I bought a new one when I did mine.

I'm gonna krokus cloth the yoke shaft and see if it smooths out, if not ill either speedi sleeve or replace, Ive got a few junk 18's around here, might have a good one in one of those, Also, when I took the yoke off, the 1 1/8 nut holding it on came off with one hand on the wrench. Probably not the 175 lb ft that its supposed to be. Maybe that was the cause of my leaking? or at least contributing? When you double seals do they both go in the same way?

I doubled the seals on mine - I think I use the Federal mogul ones from NAPA if I remember correctly as they are a bit thinner. I put them on both in the same direction - same direction as if I had only used one. If any oil get by the inner one, it would still have to get by the second one. Seems to work quite well...and it really helps the parking brake if it isn't oil saturated all the time.

Put sealant on the spines of the yolk as well. I just finished my D-18 / T-90 rebuild. Just pried my seals out . Once while in the jeep and once when everything was out on the bench, Use sealant under speedi sleave or it will leak there also. Good luck!!!

You can seal under a sleeve? And it'll still go on? I thought the clearances were too tight for that. Also, and don't laugh, but the seals go in with the rubber side facing out towards the yoke, right? That's how its in there now.

Use threadlocker on installation of the sleeve I use red Loc-Tite brand. It acts as a sealer, as a lubricant on installation, and locks the sleeve on the yoke once it sets up. The lip of the seal should face inward toward the transfer case to keep the lube in.

I think that if you change the yoke it would probably be a good idea to check the end play.... others may know.
On both of my transfer cases I threw the felt seal away and doubled up the seals with double lip seals. No leaks!

If you do double seals, I would suggest packing some grease between them. Seals actually rely on the oil to lubricate them. The outer seal gets no oil and the rubber is likely to burn up on the dry shaft fairly quickly and not do much for you when the inner seal eventually fails.

This is a good idea! I forgot to add.... after a few weeks I got a weird squeak.... turns out it was coming from the outer seal on the rear output shaft. I made a very small hole in the steel portion of the seal just large enough to get a spray can straw into. I squirted some tri flow in there back in March. several thousand miles ago..... The hole was made with an awl lightly tapped with a hammer on the upper side of the seal. Once a year squirt kinda thing.....

    Edit to add info.

I was always told to grease the seals before assembling wheel bearings, pinion seals, and whatever. This is a great idea to pack the void with grease.

I learned that if there is a spring that holds tension around the seal that the spring faces the oil.

It's actually cheaper to replace the yoke with a new one then to buy a Speedy Sleeve for it. I can see sleeveing one for a full restoration, but I replaced mine as it was nicely grooved to aid in oil dispersion.
