Yup. I’m cutting a bunch of sticks for cross bracing to try to keep warpage to a minimum. :worry:

There must be some kind of science to allowing for warpage, but I'm thinking it's more "educated guesswork". I was shocked to see how much things move when you weld them together.

    I’m sure there is...
I put sticks where they just fit (without jamming them in anywhere) and strap them TIGHT. A few of them still fall out as it’s getting welded, but it’s better than nothing.

That's the kind of stuff I end up doing too. I've ended up with a few smoldering jigs, but I got the weld done! :bananatool:

    Cage is ready for paint.

Getting the flywheel in to begin reassembly to see if this thing runs. Gas tank install is next while I wait for a pilot bearing to arrive.

Primer for now. I don’t want to make it too permanent before I’m sure I’m done with brackets and tabs.

Long term, I have no idea.

I was in the steel business for 20 years. The last company I worked for provided finished parts for various manufacturers. I can say in all honesty, the parts you produced by hand are far and away superior to some of the stuff we used to ship out. You are an amazing craftsman!

I finally got around to using these mounts I made a while back to mount the gas tank.

But when I had it in place, I noticed an oversight when I built the tank. I made allowances for the axle to travel up into the tank’s space, but I didn’t have the spring plates on at the time. The pass side plate would've just barely contacted the tank in the last few inches of its travel, so I had to cut out a corner of the tank for clearance.

I’m working on a mount for the fuel pump now so I can get some fuel in this thing and get the wiring hooked up. I’ll hopefully be able to fire it up by this weekend.

Is this a jeep or your final art project?

The fuel pump/filter mount is done. Here’s a pic of the stock Volvo mount (that bolts up under the car) next to what I came up with. This tray tucks in next to the rear driveshaft and bolts to a plate that will be the frame-boxing in that section.

The three outer holes accept rubber mounts that also clip into the inner mount that the pump and filter bolt to. That little hook is there to prevent the mounts from ripping loose in an impact or rollover.

    Mock up:

My plan is to make a belly pan out of abrasion resistant plate that will come all the way back to the spring mounts, so this will be protected by that.
Ya know... for those really tall speed bumps at Dairy Queen.
