Just finishing up on a year plus project and I've started to drive it around the local parking lot.

I've got a new clutch with a resurfaced flywheel and the Advanced Adapter chain mechanism.

I am finding that from disengaged to engaged is a really short distance on the pedal. A lot of burned rubber...

Is this normal on a new clutch setup?

Also, what springs and where are being used for the clutch pedal return? Concerned that the throw out bearing might be touching the clutch pressure plate when not engaged.

I have one on the clutch fork to bell housing but it looks like the chain mechanism weight is winning out. I think it is some sort of spring left over from a brake drum rebuild.

In addition to the spring from the fork to the bellhousing, I run a spring from the pedal arm (below the floorboard - down near the pivot bar) to back on the frame. This second spring isn't necessarily needed (I ran with just the fork spring for a long time), but the pedal arm binds on the floorboard hole when offroad sometimes, and the extra spring return helps ensure it doesn't stick. Can't help with the amount of throw - I will say that my oem style set-up has quite a lot of pedal movement, which makes it nice to smoothly engage and disengage the clutch, especially when offroad with only a 3 speed (I often have to burn some clutch). I believe you can change how much pedal movement you need for the TO bearing based on the proportion of length of the fork on each side of the pivot stud....I don't know how the AA chain mechanism affects things, but this sounds like one of those situations were making sure you have the right clutch fork etc would be priority before trying to get into the details of modifying or customizing the clutch fork or pivot stud.

The motion ratio shouldn’t have changed with the chain kit. The torque tube is a 1/1, so any difference in throw between pedal and arm should remain the same with the chain rotating around the pivot on a sprocket. I’d guess it’s in the clutch. I’d disconnect the linkage from the release arm and make sure you aren’t having a stack up height issue. Meaning pressure plate to tall or release bearing to long causing PP to constantly be under pressure.

Might be time to buy that borescope I was looking at...

That clutch release arm opening is pretty large in the bellhoising. I’d just disconnect the linkage and grab the release arm and make sure you have fore/aft play of the release bearing. If you do, then I’d start looking at clutch pressure plate and disc.

Do you have the old clutch fork that you replaced? Might be worth comparing the two? If you don't, maybe post a pic of it with a ruler and some measurements for us to compare? Clutch issues are really frustrating and it takes time to figure them out - mostly because removing and reinstalling the transmission is a PITA....

Ive got a heavy duty clutch i think that i put in mine. It is on and off. I plan to replace it this winter for a oem style. Aa chain linkage now, had the stock tube setup, it didnt matter. Either linkage setup it was still on and off.

Adjusted so it would engage low to the floor, almost all the way up, same end results.

I'm picking up a 67 tomorrow that has the identical short clutch problem. Hope to see a solution here.
