Yes, but all Gen I sbc's have those front mount holes, 1955 to 2000.

That looks to be a good wagon. I like the wagons because they can hold more people, still a Jeep.
In Colorado you find the best Jeeps.

Like the early CJ's, pickups, wagons, FC's. As long as it's Jeep, let's go wheeling.

Probably not the rig - it was in the older part of town and had been owed by the same family for years as well... this would have been about '04...

Remember - overpaid is relative to the market. From what I can see the market has at least doubled in price over the last 5 years and I'm not looking for anything.

James, If you truly want to ID the engine, there are two locations on the block that will give you the necessary information to ID the engine. As I said in post #14, on the right front corner just in front of the head is a flat. This number letter data stamped into the block tells you what the engine is. At the left rear corner of the block behind the left head is a number cast into the block. It tells you where (GM plant) the engine block was cast / built and it's intended use.

I can't get to the block cast number yet - too tight against the firewall. The engine ID number is difficult to read...but I will post it up here:

Its hard to tell in the pic what is actual stamped impression and what looks like just some paint pattern....I did a graphite/pencil scratching to help read...and the code is 12-FC. I don't see any letter for the location of plant or another number to complete the date of production....

In addition to working on the engine ID codes...think I found the road draft hose back behind the dist...you can just see it back in there:

got some stuff removed that seem to be causing some problems the other day:
    1) The carb was leaking fuel from the middle gasket...so pulled the carb and cleaned it for a while...going to look on Mikes Carb site and see about rebuilding it....Its a quadrajet and has both some varnish and some gunk everywhere.

    2) Removed the fuel pump as it was leaking fuel, although it might have been one of the rubber line connections...Going to replace it all...but there are lots of different sbc fuel pumps, so have to figure out which one to go with.
    3) and just for aesthetic reasons, removed the coolant overflow tank and pulled the homemade shroud - it was some sort of galvanized sheeting/roofing that was 2 pieces riveted together...You can see how far back the engine is mounted and thus how far the fan is from the radiator...Additionally, it looks like the original L226 radiator was re-used and was moved back and slightly to the driver side...and is mounted into the back of the headlight? Going to have to address that at some point...

The Quadrajet carb answers the question about the intake manifold. That carb was never used on the early small blocks. Speedway has a relatively nice high-right side alternator mount that would bolt to your short water pump and the right front manifold bolt. The down side of those early heads is that they have no accessory mounting holes.

Be sure to seal the well plugs in the bottom of the main body with some JB Weld.

Yep 65 thru 85 for the q-jet. That looks like an early one to me.
Put my name down at 1966 for the whole shebang. Carb and motor 283 from a truck.
    90% guessing.

So I haven't had a chance to look into this...but what are the advantage of switching over from generator to an alternator (and I would probably go with 10SI style and remove the external VR).

Still working on this determination, but it may not matter much anyway. So its looking like an early 265/283 block with later (mid to late 60s?) intake with spread bore (Qjet compatible). I looked for a bit today at the lower passenger side of the block (while removing the fuel pump) and didn't see anything obvious that would have been an engine mount boss...but I don't really know what I am looking for and didn't get a pic. I am fine with the Qjet (although it maxes out at 750cfm which seems high, the small primaries should allow it to work well with a 283)...just downloaded the manual...looks quite a bit more complicated to rebuild than a R2g. I have to check on jet and metering rod sizes...not sure what is in the carb now...hopefully its been tuned for the high Colo elevation, but I may need to downsize a bit.

I believe the engine is a 1957 283 cu. in. built in Flint, MI. January 2. Originally the engine was backed up with a powerglide transmission, had a 4 barrel carburetor for use in a car. Casting number at left rear of block will provide more information.

The '58-up side engine mounts have three raised theaded bosses in a inverted triangle pattern. Without the side mounts, this is an early sbc, as in 265 or 283 from '55-'57. Ed probably nailed your engine from the stamped front pad. The front mount you have is a popular aftermarket mount, probably made by Hurst. The sbc parts interchange pretty much for 35+ years, so lots of parts (heads, manifolds, etc) from later engines could be on your engine. That bellhousing looks like a vintage aftermarket piece too.
The casting number adjacent to the bellhousing flange will tell what the engine is, though several engines in the '60s and '70s used the same casting. Pull a valve cover, and between the valve springs there is a casting number that will identify the heads. I brought my machine shop casting number book with me (I'm at my Mom's for the next 10 days). In my opinion, the 283 was the best engine for a Wagon; plenty of power, but not enough torque to break the T90 and rear axles.
Overall, you Wagon looks pretty nice and solid. I've had Wagons off and on for the past 30+ years. I have two Sedan Deliveries, and a 226 Wagon right now, so yes, you can say I like them. There are lots of subtle differences over the years, but around 1960, some of the most apparent changes took place with the 1-piece glass rear hatch and a flatter ribbed roof. Anything I can hepl with, give me a shout!

thanks - I will be asking lots of questions, especially with regard to the sbc as I have never had one before. Is it sacrilege to say this...I don't think I have ever even driven a sbc before ...ok now that I have lost all your respect I will do my best to earn it back...
