The lettering on the side is (T-18-1B) and just below it is (Wg DIV)

On the shift cover the lettering is (13-01-097-901)

Reverse is up and to the right and the PTO cover is on the drivers side

There is no lettering that I could tell on the passenger side of the tranny

That's a Jeep T-18 from '78 or prior. Adapter plate should be iron. 100% Jeep. The casting numbers on the side don't tell you anything except that it's a T-18. 13-01 is T-18. WG DIV is Warner Gear division of Borg-Warner. IIRC the switch on the top is for TCS (transmission controlled spark) and the backup light switch is hidden under the floor steel.

What's the rest of the year, model and equipment information of your Jeep? Should put that in your signature file so it's always in your posts. Could be a factory close-ratio T-18, depending on year, equipment and VIN.

<later> Ok, I looked at your profile and Jeep offered the close-ratio T-18 with the 258. Third character in your VIN would be an "M." If you doubt it, you can count teeth on the input gear: 23 teeth for 4.02:1 and 17 teeth for 6.32:1.

What do your floor plates look like?

Jeep T-18 should have an identifying tag under one of the cover bolts, but it's often lost. Check the cover bolts hidden under the sheet metal.

I should have mentioned but the transmission did not come factory with my Jeep. It originally had a 3 speed. The tag is missing. I believe the engine is from an 84 cj.
The previous owner kinda frankensteined this thing together

It's still factory Jeep parts. Iron plate adapter, T-14 bell, Jeep transmission. I can tell it's a Jeep T-18 from the bolt spacing on the driver's side. If there is no tag, you'll need to pull the top off and count the input gear teeth to tell if it's close or wide ratio, 4.02 or 6.32 1st resp. Or, measure your speed/RPM/distance in 1st and use the axle ratio and tire diameter plus some algebra to find the gear ratio. Only two Jeep T-18s used that plate adapter; the CR and the WR. The WR never appeared in the CJ with that plate, only 258 trucks and wagons.

You could fill in your signature file.

Pretty sure you have the wide ratio (6.32), i have the exact same transmission right now in the jeep, and didnt find anymore information than the one provided by TIM.

I have the same t18-1b with the reverse up right.

I would not assume. AFAIK without the tag with the PN, there is no way to tell the ratios without counting the teeth on the gears or measuring the rotation with speed vs. RPM or such. That iron plate adapter allows only one transmission with the 6.32:1 ratio, and it only appeared in the Jeep Wagoneers, Cherokees and J-trucks with the 258 and the AMC T-14/T-15 bell from 1971 through 1979. Jeep did not build a lot of full-size trucks with the 258, and even fewer with the T-18. Most were V8s, and the plate adapter for those is about 5" thick.

This is the plate adapter specific to the 258/T-18 application -

This is the T-18 from my J20 -

You can see the bolt pattern and how long the plate adapter is with a V8. The bell for an '82 like this is different, but the T-18 case is the same.

I'd presume most wide ratio T-18s in '76 or earlier CJs are either Ford T-18s that have been adapted at both ends (the T-150 bell - see this thread Np435 What Did I Just Buy?), or are Jeep T-18s that have been converted using the short Ford input shaft and again the T-150 bell. The only way you can use that 3/4" iron plate adapter and T-14 bell is with one of the two Jeep input shafts that has the right length for that; from a '72-75 close ratio CJ-5 T-18, or from one of the 258 Jeep trucks described above.

Tim, I was one of the lucky ones to find a 258/T18 combo with the wide ratio. Mine is exactly like the first photo except mine has reverse down and to the right beneath 4th

    Hello TMGR,
I know this is a pretty old post but I also have the FSJ T18 with the 3/4” adapter mated to a 258. I am stuck on where to find the correct throw out bearing. NAPA has them but they are short at 1.66” in length. Do you know of a source for the correct one? Thank you!

Ok, this is going to sound a bit dumb, but where is the stock number from? As I search, I am unable to use it as a reference. Sorry to ask twice, and thank you again!

Sorry I don’t know where you can cross that mid 1970’s JEEP number over unless you have an old fashioned parts house with real books on hand.
Nor do I have access to an original bearing/ sleeve for measurements.

    You say a 3/4” adapter plate ?
That to me suggests it’s from a mid 1970’s AMC.
Can you measure the main drive stick out length ?

Actually Jeep shows different part numbers depending what particular Jeep it is.
    V8 or straight 6 ?
    FSJ or CJ ?

The transmission tag states: 13-01-192. 5358285. Reverse is down and away from 4th, making it a 1979 or later.
    My initial investigation shows 1979 J10 I6 with T18.
Question, is stick out measured from the bearing retainer face or from the transmission face?

I had it mounted with my T14 8.25” bell and it fit fine. I am asking questions because the 1491 bearing seems short at 1.66” compared to the T14 bearing at 2.0”.

Center force 1491 is the correct bearing.
