I just brought my 60 CJ 5 from Colorado at 9300 ft to Florida at 51 ft.
It took 3 hrs to get it started and off the trailer. It hasn’t started since. I changed the plugs and they were BLACK!! Other than change the plug, what should I do, jets, timing??

Full blown tuneup is called for. I would do it as a matter of course.

So far, I’ve done everything but points and condenser. That’s neat.

How does the inside of the distributor cap look? How about the rotor?

Best test it, need to take it back to Colorado and see if it starts there...

I'll bet you need to look at the carb's jets...

Wouldn't/shouldn't it be leaner for high altitude?

If you take a motor that runs well at sea level to high altitude it will run richer as there is less O2 up there.
    On motorcycles we used to drop the needle down one notch.;
Seems like your situation is not that way as you are richer at sea level. Call one of the old carb specialists.

I'm wondering if it ran rich at altitude, eventually fouling the plugs?

What's the condition of the gas in the tank? Good? Questionable?

    This.
Always get all basics to specification before indulging in speculation and guesswork, including most especially points, and timing

That's the problem with Internet diagnosing....speculation and guesswork is going to happen since we have nothing in front of us to look at except for a monitor and a keyboard. :D

    change of altitude
so a change of jets would be in order . but you got to pull top off carb to see what jet you are running now

But if it had a lean jet in there now would the plugs be black?

Why would you take a perfectly good rig from Colorado to FL where it will rust???

You people keep stealing our toys :ninja:

Colorado sells a 85 octane gas, might want to dump some 91 or 93, depending on what they sell there, in the tank.
