Per FinoCJ's earlier post, here is a link to my build thread and some info on rotating or replacing the sector studs...

    Tim E's 68 Cj5 Build

However, someone is now selling a reasonably priced good quality V6 (15/16") sector kit on ebay. If the sector shaft is still good, rotating the sector studs is virtually free if you have the equipment and ability. Otherwise a quality replacement sector and Ross box rebuild will definitely improve your steering.

I kept my floor pedals, master cylinder, and front dump exhaust by using a F150/Bronco Power steering gear mounted to the outside of the frame. Another less common option to consider.

I’d run the Ross and see how much you love it!

I did the power saginaw and it was much much more labor and cost than I had anticipated. If you are not running oversize tires or off roading in tight spaces my recommendation would be to rebuild the ross box. If you find it inadequate you can always contemplate something further. Once you begin the upgrade to power it is difficult to go back.

I am leaning towards keeping the stock steering setup. We are trying to keep the jeep as original as we can and have kept the tires near the standard size. A re-build of a steering box is a little above my skill level however. Other than Herm, what other places would you guys recommend for a re-build. Got a quote from Herm at $500 for a rebuild.

    Thanks,

I would encourage you to rebuild it, you'll get plenty of help here as needed, learn something new and increase your confidence when it comes to other components. No real risk in taking it out and taking it apart to see what you have...you'll be half-way there! My elderly neighbor has a saying, "Ain't nothin to it but to do it." Simple but true.

Here is a link to a more complete kit that should have everything you need for a good rebuild...

That linked sector shaft should work on your '68 with Dauntless power. But, who knows if the steering box is original. It should be, but I have seen lots of things on old Jeeps that make me shake my head in wonder.

As Donny mentioned, this is the correct kit for a '68 V6 if original. I'd take it apart first to see what is going on and what parts you may need. Easy enough to measure the sector shaft, 15/16" is correct for a V6 or M38A1 Ross box.

Search the military sites, the V6 used the same as the M38A1. I found one that was re-manufactured for the military, not may left. There might have some NOS in there stock or know a rebuilder.
