Any modern element paper air cleaner and housing will work on the 2G. Just need to have the plastic adapter to go from the 4-barrel diameter to the 2-barrel diameter. When I first got my Jeep, it had an Edlebrock air cleaner on it. (Has an oil bath now)

The V-type engines typically have the large diameter paper filters centered on the carburetor and a single snorkel. There were not many V-type engines that used the small diameter carburetors like the 2G.

I took a factory air cleaner for the 258, meant for the Carter BBD, and grafted on the center portion from a Ford air cleaner to make a factory-appearing air cleaner that fits the Holley/Motorcraft patterned carburetors.

Had the 258 air cleaner, bought the Mustang II air cleaner at the junkyard for $5. Cut out the pieces with aircraft shears and used my plumbing soldering rig to join them. Easy. This could be an option instead of the plastic inserts.

I don't know if there are any stock GM air cleaners that will work without a spacer. Perhaps if you have an automatic choke and lower the throttle linkage somehow. And for cheap the best I have seen on Ebay is about 50 shipped for one very similar to the one Focker posted here. Be sure to double check the carburetor opening very early GM had a 2 5/16 opening the Dauntless is 2 5/8 and lots of 3 1/16 inch on later models. Be warned it is nearly like pulling teeth to get people to measure the opening for you though. Here is one that would work with a spacer I was able to get person listing it to measure. 1967 Impala Chevelle Nova Camaro 283 2bbl air cleaner | eBay

That one comes with the built in funnel..... If you get any water splashed into the engine bay, the well placed channels in the top direct it toward your new water injection system.......

Not sure what the love affair is with these OEM air cleaners?...........a paper element is next to worthless off road...

That’s what I’m thinking. Good washable filter and pre filter over it works really good. My k&n hasn’t been washed in 3 yrs. pre filter keeps the dirt out. My Jeep sees allot of dirt/ gravel roads, more than most people even drive their jeeps. Just got back from alleviating the neighborhood of a really big boar..... 2 in two nights!

I have an older Chevy paper filter on Farm Jeep Willy currently, but I am a big fan of oil bath air cleaners. When I find one locally to fit my 2Jet, I will put an oil bath on. All the ones I find are rotted (!!) or dented up. I know, I know, they are a mess to clean out, but when I take an intake hose off my old farm equipment, it is sparkly clean inside. If I run the Farmall M for any length of time discing or skidding logs, that cup has a lot of dirt in it. It must work.

Read if you want, react as you will.

Debunking the K&N Myth - Why OEM is Better

How I'll react: I have a larger than stock K&N in what I think may be a housing from a Duster (how ironic...). Paper stinks when it gets wet, but my housing isnt the speed shop exposed element type so probably wont get wet. I'll switch to paper, change more frequently than I clean the K&N.

On my bike the cleaner is almost ridiculously exposed so I'll stay with K&N. It gets wet. A lot.

In the '70s, Jeep had paper element filters, but all the new cars I saw were equipped with a foam wrap. The foam wrap extended the life of the paper filter significantly when running in dusty environs. The foam trapped the big dust particles, and you could clean and re-oil it. IIRC off-road race cars used a similar setup, with a very tall air cleaner element.

K&N and others sell a foam wrap that you can cut to size for your application. If you change the length, glue it before you oil it. I used weatherstrip cement, which is supposed to soften in oil... but no issues so far.

Interesting read, but not a bit suprised at the results of that testing. Posted from a Nissan forum, I can draw some parallels. I am on BMW forums, and the vast majority of those folks have "cold air imtakes" under the hood in place of the OEM air cleaners. When I bought my BMW, it had this same modification. Sourcing all the OEM parts was first on my list to put my car back to stock. Yes, that K&N filter and stainless piping looked neat, but the car had trouble codes relating to the MAF sensor. No wonder! The MAF was well-oiled from the K&N air filter. It also drew hot air from in the engine compartment. The stock large pleated paper setup draws from a duct in the front spoiler, and a scoop behind the left headlight, ram-air style, certainly cooler than the engine bay. I think BMW knew what they were doing when the designed the induction system.
As long as paper elements stay dry, they are usually very effective, provided they are not 4" diameter. I also like oil bath filters for very dusty conditions. I've been around heavy equipment long enough to know how well they work.

Regarding additional foam wraps and mesh diapers for a K&N, some may argue that spending more money to help an already expensive and inferior performing filter be a little more effective is wrong minded.

But some may believe adding an oiled foam pre-filter to extend its effective life may be worthwhile.

Most people way over oil their washable type filters....
They also wash/ dry them in an aggressive manner that damages them. Never use high pressure air to blow a washable filter dry. We have a couple K&N air cleaners are are 15-20 years old with 3x per year washings and the outers pre filters I posted above.
As far as performance goes those are Nissan guys who are working on their tow vehicles air filters....... They site exactly zero actual dyno pulls in the write up; yet they say that the expensive filters decreased HP. The first 4 youtube videos I found show different than the Nissan forum guys...... While there are no seat of pants type of HP increases, they are still increases. For street uses they really aren't necessary for HP gains. For high RPM racing and dirty off road environments they have the advantage hands down.
Those stock type air cleaner housings are probably more of a heat soak than anything. If the fresh air intake on the stock type housing was piped via flex hose to the base of the windshield or to the stock heater intake port in the grille they would probably be more effective. They mostly look like a good place to collect dust and dirt. IMO

For me it either works, plugs up, gets wet or restricts flow.......a seat of the pants test any weekend works for me.

What i'm getting at is most people will never feel any difference between the k&n type and the paper. The k&n however usually out preforms the paper elements and holds up better in harsher environments.

I used one of those it looks really cool but it did require some modification and a 2 barrel/4 barrel carburetor adapter

Just had a quick question, my 225 has the original oil bath air cleaner. I have found that some prefer this as it helps keep the dust out of the engine but others don't due to the mess that they can great. What do you guys prefer? Are the oil bath cleaners a pain to maintain? Thanks.

None currently but I have had cars with oil bath air cleaners. They have oil in them, you clean them with some solvent in a pan, and you have oil/solvent waste you need to clean up and dispose of. Depends on how repellent that is to you. Some may consider that messy; certainly messier than a paper filter you can pick up with your ungloved hand and throw away. I'd wear my shop clothes and disposable gloves. Depends on your perspective - no messier than changing the oil or most other car-related work.

I don’t mind at all. I change the oil in the oil bath every 3rd oil change.
Just have to be careful taking the unit off the carb. I drain the oil into the plastic container I use for the engine oil. It has a funnel end, so I place the used oil into the empty oil bottles from the oil change. Then take the used oil to the Napa just down the road.
