Last Saturday I helped the Boy Scouts collect Christmas trees for their annual fund raiser. I used my truck and trailer and went I got home, I tried to back the trailer into its usual parking spot on the grassy hill. The grass was so wet and saturated that I couldn't get any traction, even in 4wd. I gave up and left the truck parked in the mud all week.

This morning I used my '70 jeep and its Smittybuilt winch to pull the truck off the muddy hill. I wish I had this winch, but it costs as much as my jeep.

I strapped the jeep to a large fir tree.

I started the jeep's engine and pulled the choke out enough for a high idle to put the alternator in the charging range. My winch has one cool feature: the remote control can be operated wirelessly. While I was in the truck steering, I remotely controlled the winch and reeled the truck toward the jeep.

The winch had no problem pulling the truck out of the mud and up the hill to solid ground. At this point, I was able to disconnect all the straps and drive the truck back out to the street.

Attaching to the tree was OK since truck just needed a little help on greasy lawn. Had your truck been axle deep I predict your Jeep frame may have had fewer bends.

Absolutely true. Or a few extra bends, like in the rear cross member. Don't ask....

Same with the '02 we had. Pulled our RV like a beast (8.1L/Alison), but one trip on a two-track trail in MI was enough. Barely made it out - had onboard air so was able to air down to practically nothing and get out.

    Good point.
When you have a really stuck vehicle, you should tie off the front of frame/bumper. Run your straps under the frame and attach to a stronger anchor if at all possible. That way you don't stretch the frame in anyway. Just food for thought....

I think the coyote tried that once and the jeep winched itself into a black hole..

If possible, I just nuzzle up to a BFT ("tree") so the bumper is pressing against it as I winch.

My friend got his Tacoma stuck when driving in three feet of snow to get a box trailer out from behind his barn this winter. At first we hooked the Tacoma winch up to my Subaru Forester and it just dragged the Subaru backwards towards the tacoma, which had a trailer attached to it. Next we just hooked a snatch strap to the forester and I snatched him out with ease, we only had to go about a truck length.
I wish I had gotten a photo or movie of the Subaru pulling the Tacoma. That same Subaru has pulled a raft off a bridge and also pulled a ford pickup out of a river after an emergency brake problem the truck encountered on a boat ramp. Turns out the e brake release isn’t the hood release, and neither should be operated through the window or you may get a wild ride down a boat ramp with your body in the truck and your feet hanging out the window.

Just coming back around to this thread, great job recovering your truck! Pickups are so bad for traction without a little weight in the bed!

I really like the color of your jeep, do you know offhand what color it is?

No, I don't know the color of the jeep; it came that way. The PO said the jeep belonged to a woman who had it and then sold it after a divorce. When I got the jeep, the tailgate was in poor shape.

I stripped the tailgate, primed it, and painted it in my garage with a $13 Harbor Freight gun. I went to an auto paint store to get matching paint. They gave me a book of colors. I took the book out into the parking lot and picked the color I thought best matched. The final color doesn't quite match, but that's part of the charm of an old jeep :D.
