Been a while guys, got a new job and have been traveling like a wild banshee.... That being said, I had a bad fuel smell coming from the Jeep when I parked it in the garage. I ordered a new "OEM" sealed gas cap and installed it. When I would get home from a joy ride, i could hear and feel the fuel tank gurgeling, which was ne and odd. I have also awoken to puddles of gas on the garage floor the past few mornings, even after replacing the old gas cap? Any suggestions ideas? The V6 had a fuel pump installed at some point in it's history if that helps anything? Thanks guys. I will try and post some pix later of the cosmetic work I've done recently.

Assuming this is an original style fuel tank, I don't believe the v6 fuel tank is designed for a sealed gas cap - the cap needs to vent as there is no other place for air to enter into the tank as the fuel level drops. Additionally, changes in temperature would cause pressure changes in the tank as well that need venting through the cap. Not sure if the sealed cap is the cause of the puddles of fuel - but it sounds like you might have a leak elsewhere in the fuel system?

Yep. The under-seat tanks all used a vented gas cap.

Thanks FinoCJ, the fuel is dripping on the floor daily directly underneath the gas tube/inlet/cap. Just need to figure out what the actual OEM gas cap looks like to ensure it has a venting capability.

I'll suggest the obvious... don't fill your tank to the top? :D

This is actually good advice, if I fill mine and park it in the garage, it doesn't drip out but it sure makes the garage smell of gasoline. If it's down a little bit, no smell.

I just used a small drill bit and added a vent to a sealed cap. Should I expect any issue?

I did that with my old Ford truck a few years ago and haven't had a problem.

My experience - old cars stink of gas. The typical stink went away when vapor recovery was required for all new cars.

Vented caps are *supposed* to have a labyrinth in the cap that allows fumes to escape (and air to enter) but stops slosh from exiting ... mostly. The CJ tank is particularly bad in this respect, just because of the shape of the tank and filler.

Yes, old cars stink of gas, and the exhaust smells like an old car too. Sometimes I just start mine up so I can smell that great smell. Like when I was a kid.
Cars now days don't smell much. I guess all that emissions stuff works

Thanks for all the input, except the smart alek, but what less could I expect right... I did just buy the new Walk's gas cap, but think it may be due to the serious changes in temperature we've had here in the DFW area, and having filled the tank up fairly recently. I put it outside in the driveway after posting this and have seen no further leakage. Will continue to monitor.

That one "should be" vented....might be worth a call or email to Walcks to confirm. I've found them to be pretty helpful in the past.

I have one, it is vented. You can call them to be sure. They are good.

I too got the one from Walcks and it works. I still have my original but it needs a gasket.

I guess I am the smart alec but I was serious when I said I likes the way non smog motors smell. I like the smell of gas and oil and hot motors. I have followed along behind early Mustangs and enjoyed a rich running motor. It is probably better that all our cars are not like that now but it brings back memories of many years ago.

I don't fill mine to the top, if I do it will leak when the gas expands, or if I park on a hill.

Could always try parking on a 2x8 to raise the driver's side up a little.
