Need HELP, BOP to 225 what am I missing
    • This is the second time I've tried to install the Buick 225, first time I learned I did not have the BOP adapter ring to TH400
    • Found one, cleaned it up and it fits on the 225 but does not bolt up to the TH400
    • Do I need an adapter plate or is something missing?
    • I've gone thru hours of threads and nothing suggests that the ring has an adapter, My ring was off a Jeepster V6 and TH400 unless its not and I was sold the wrong part?

Any input will be greatly appreciated

Post a picture of just the front of the T400 case.
    I think that's your problem.
That adapter ring closely resembles the parts book photo.

Your TH400 is a Chevy version case. I have a TH400 from an AMC (later) Jeepster, and it has a round pattern that may fit your adapter ring. I don't recall ever working on a Kaiser-era Jeepster with the automatic, but I think they used the Buick/Olds/Pontiac pattern case that bolted directly to the 225 V6 with no adapter ring. Your 225 is the BOP pattern, and there are TH400's with that case.
A Chevy V8 or 4.3 V6 will bolt right up to your TH400.

Yes that’s the confusion I’m having, It should be the stock 1970 TH400 and a 1966 Buick V6 225 the BOP ring fits the motor perfectly just not the transmission

+1. The peak at the top of the pattern is telling. Only Chevrolet engines will bolt to that pattern.

Jeep never used the BOP case for the TH400. From 1965ish, all models got the small round "nailhead" aka "universal' TH400 with an adapter ring and other parts to make it work with the Jeep engines. Jeep also used an AMC pattern case (no adapter) starting 1973-74ish with the AMC engines, until they dropped the TH400 for 1980. Both the Buick 225 and Buick 350 used in the nailhead TH400 with a BOP adapter ring. The J-series parts book here Jeep® Parts Manuals online covers the 350 Wagoneers and J-trucks. TH400 parts listed for them will be the same as your Jeepster.

This is the nailhead TH400 you need to work with your adapter.

Another option - If you can find a BOP TH400 from a passenger car, you can use that in place of what you have. That will bolt-up to your engine without the adapter ring.

As said, that is a Chevrolet bolt pattern transmission and is NOT original to the vehicle. As you found the adapter ring will not work. You might look on Jeg's or Summit Racing, or even Speedway. They used to make a BOP to Chevrolet adapter. Not sure if still available. The other option is to get the correct transmission to go with that adapter ring. A standard AMC TH-400 will not work. It needs to be a transmission that used the adapter ring. The front bellhousing is different in thickness and whatnot on them. I know on the AMC engines that used the adapter ring there was a crankshaft spacer that was used. I don't remember if the Buick used one or not. Maybe someone with a parts book can chime in on that.

Edit: looks like Timgr beat me to it.

    :p

Pretty sure the Buicks did not use a spacer. No time to search in the book right now ... maybe the OP can search the book and confirm.

Thanks guys, there’s my issue it is not a stock transmission I guess it’s been changed over time I have seen the summit adapter plates my next concern is with the Chevy transmission do I need to have that one and a half 2 inch spacer ring because I believe the adapter plates are only half inch thick give or take so will my torque converter that’s in the transmission bolt up to a stock Fly wheel?

The nailhead is "universal" because it's shorter than the Chevy or BOP cases. The Buick nailhead engines stick out to meet the transmission case. When used for another application, this leaves room for the adapter ring. The Chevy TH400 would bolt up to a Chevy engine with a Chevy torque convertor and flex plate, no added adapter. Same for the BOP case to Buick 225. If you adapt the Chevy TH400 to a Buick, you'd look to the adapter maker at Summit to tell you what parts to use.

Thanks again, so much easier to go through Summit. Wish The PO mentioned that before I started trying to track down the BOP Ring I have now, that was in the realm of Unicorns to find one not damaged
