I hadn't driven my JEEP in about two weeks. It started normal and I let it run a couple of minutes before I left. I headed out and then I got this coughing and bucking which decreased power. Brought it back home and it idles fine. Raised the hood and saw this vacuum line laying behind the distributor.

The way this backfired through the carburetor it made me zero in on replacing the vacuum line. Problem is that I see no ports from which it could have come. Here are photos around the carburetor.

I've looked in the FSM and don't see where this line could have been. Any thoughts?
Points, condenser and rotor are fairly new.

I can't make out what the vacuum line under the throttle linkage is. Is that part of the situation?

Do you have a vacuum advance type distributor?

there was no line there when I bought the JEEP. I think that is where the vacuum connects for the heater. The heater is not connected. I put that line on there a couple of years ago.

How do I determine if the dist is vacuum advance type? It is bone stock AFAIK.

It would have a small clamshell canister on the side, with a vacuum hose fitting. But honestly I have no idea if they were ever fitted in your year jeep.

I see that vacuum advance on the v-6 distributors. The one on mine doesn't appear to have the vacuum assembly.

This quote makes me think that hose is an unrelated distraction. A vacuum leak that bad would probably have the opposite effect: poor idle, but runs ok at speed. I'd start swapping electrical components, starting with the condenser and points.

Any break in a motor's vacuum system is a leak. I suspect water in the old gas.

Might be time to clean carb, going lean somewhere, or try filling and gaping points?

It finally quit and would not start. This post and several others with condenser failures made me swap to the old condenser first. While the cap was off I looked at the points, rotor and cap (all new and perfect). The condenser was the culprit. Swapped to the old condenser and it fired right up and runs perfect.
The part that failed was a new part installed late last summer and maybe has 100? or so miles on it.
I bought the Heavy Duty Airtex from Rock Auto because the description said heavy duty and was only slightly higher. The website indicated it was the one most frequently purchased for this application. Oh well at least I'm back on the road.
    Thanks.

    BTW
I still don't know where that hose goes or where it came from. It wasn't there when I completed the tune up last summer.

I'm going to go thru my old fotos to see if I see it somewhere. When I found it it was laying slightly behind the cap.

That a pickup or wagon engine? I don't believe any of the CJ's came with a breather in the top valve cover. The PCV was mounted on the drivers side cover for the exhaust valves.

My 65 has a vacuum line to the heater control. I will look tomorrow and see where it connects.

That little line that is under the carb goes the heater control on my 64 134 F head. My carb base does not have a port on it, the picture I am sending the heater vac line is plugged.[IMG]

Mine also runs from the PCV valve below the carburetor thru a runner grommet in the firewall to the heater control.
Maybe a backfire could pop it off? IMG_20190117_111100948.jpg

Yes that's where it came from. It appears from old photos that that vacuum line came from the same location as you show. It must have been there all along from when I removed it. I just routed a line from the empty port at the base of the carburetor to where the heater control came off and pulled the remainder of the line out of the firewall. My heater is disconnected.

    Thanks.
