    Hey there,

I've recently acquired a '71 CJ5 with the 225/T14/D18 and overdrive unit (not sure on mfg.).

Has an operational Ramsey DC9-1 sitting up front, fuel tank under the driver seat, fuel tank between the rear frame rails with a ball valve near the passenger seat to switch between the two.

It also has a Kelly Bonanza top that seems to be in really good shape minus the door glass and rear hatch rattling around.

I haven't found any cancer in the tub or on the frame, little bit of surface rust here and there. I've been driving it to work for the past few days without issue.

First upgrades will be installing the Pertronix in a reman Delco dizzy and removing the doubled up hockey puck body lift... was planning on doing some poly bushings from Energy Suspension or one of the other companies.

    Thank you!

Currently collecting parts for a 4.3/SM65 swap using the Dana 18 and overdrive unit.

Not planning on swapping until the current engine or trans gives out though.

My recommendation is to drain all lubricants from both and drive it for as long as you can. [IMG]

Looks like a nice honest Jeep. I second the recomendation of driving it as long as you can. My 64 was running, poorly, because it needed a carb, but with street signs rivited on the floors. I took off the tub and started the restoration, working on it when I get time. Now I wish I kept driving it and did the jobs one at a time. I could be enjoying driving it while I was restoring it. Hopeing to find one in better shape to drive while I restore the other two.
    Be careful, Jeeps are addictive.
    Have fun with that one.
    Welcome from North Carolina.

    Thank you.

It runs and drives well! Planning on the pertronix loaded dizzy, a 94 amp 12si alternator and making some new battery and ground cables out of 2 gauge tinned marine wire with the HD military style terminals.

It does need a new heater, the current one works but not enough to heat the cab. Smells like urine when the heater is on, I think some mice may have built a nest inside and it's clogging things up.

That's apparently normal. There's a wealth of info here on making the OEM heater more effective or adding an aftermarket model that pumps out beaucoup heat and plenty of it.

I believe the one that is currently in there is an aftermarket unit.

I've dealt with the Mojave style heaters before and loved them. I'll get the largest unit that will fit under the dash without issue.

Picked up this 8k Warn today for cheap.

Planning on removing the older Ramsey and replacing it with this. I know that it may be a little modern for the CJ but I will be able to order parts for it if need be. The Ramsey is obsolete and I haven't been able to find anything for it in regard to parts.

So the Ramsey's not broke but you're fixing it? That's a nice Warn but if the Ramsey isn't done in yet, then I say run what you got.

You sure seem to be throwing a lot of money at this Jeep; electronic ignition, NGK Iridiums (overkill IMO), etc...:blah:

Sounds like you're gonna make this thing a daily driver. If so, then full speed ahead.

If Ramsey needs bushings, bearings, or seals then all of that is available. Maybe not from Ramsey, but available.

Concur with enjoying the Jeep instead ofntearing into it right away. I understand the urge. You want to drive a really nice jeep. What happens is you drive no jeep for a very long time.

The Ramsey spools in and out with the hand controller but it isn't on the same level as a more modern or reconditioned winch. It has some issues spooling in too.

And yes, I will be daily'ing the CJ. Work is only about 15 mins. away for me.

The ultimate goal is a reliable mountain vehicle. I spend a lot of time in the different ranges out here in CO and there's nothing cooler than driving some vintage iron up there!

The plugs came as a package deal from RockAuto. I was going to just buy a cap and rotor for the reman Delco dizzy until I saw the cap/rotor/plugs/wires as a bundle with each item discounted.

Choosing to go the pertronix route due to how reliable it is (nothing against points). A buddy recommended going HEI but for now I will stick with the pertronix.

To be honest I'm not sure what it currently needs. I have a local friend that has more interest in it than I do and I have a suitable replacement for it now.

Not gonna go full out and tear into the CJ yet. I've just been driving it and enjoying the ride. It drives well so I haven't touched anything yet.

I feel that upgrading the charging system is a must, I do it to everything I own. Cheap reassurance and it gets rid of some of the P.O.'s mess.

I really need to do away with the doubled up hockey puck lift too... lol.

I'm starting to get some more parts in here and there.

    - 1 AWG tinned marine cable & tinned copper lugs
    - Military style terminals
    - 12si alternator (probably gonna swap for another one)
    - Side mirrors
    - Reman starter
    - Artec Battery box for the Optima
    - New radiator from Champion

I ended up picking up a 78 amp 12si with 3 o'clock position. Gonna look around at some other local O'Reillys stores and find the 12si that's 94 amps with a 12 o'clock position.

I've got some, 14 ga fusible link, SXL 10 ga and 18 ga wire coming in along with a 540 piece adhesive lined shrink wrap wire terminal kit.

The entire charging/ ignition system is getting redone with all new wiring and parts.

My D18 has the single stick and I only have 2 HI and 4 LO... a buddy if mine said it's probably the detent springs for the poppet balls. He has a complete twin stick setup for a D18 thay he's gonna sell me, I'll pick up a master rebuild kit from Novak when I get ready to drop the t-case. That job will probably happen this upcoming spring.

I sure can be wrong-but 71 would not have had fuel tank under the drivers seat would it?

To be honest I'm not sure. Mine has one under the driver seat and one between the frame rails above the rear axle. I know one was added but I'm not sure which one it was.

They both work fine so I just look at it as a plus.
