Fuel Tank

Has anyone replaced the under seat fuel tank of a cj5 for a tank in the rear but without relocating the fuel port on the side? I want to put the fuel tank under the bed in between the frame rails but i would like to keep the fuel cap where it is now. Thanks!

 

That would take quite a fill pipe!

 

I know! Hence,my dipping into the vast ocean of knowledge I find here! I'm sure someone has at least tried it.

 

I looked at doing it and decided it was possible but not good. The fill pipe would partially be in the wheel well and penetrate in two places.

 

Why move it to under the Jeep? I like mine where it is. I put a re-popped new tank in mine, 11 years ago and have had no problems with it. Just saying.

 

Moving the filler to the rear is one of the great advantages of moving the tank. If you like the filler in the side, you can have both tanks at once.

 

What is re-popped? My concern is movability of the driver's seat. This jeep js going to be used (most likely) by my oldest son and me. I'm 5'6" on a good day and he is edging the 6 foot mark. You can see the difficulty in operating a clutch pedal at such dissimilar leg lengths. I want to rig my to-be purchased seats with slides.

 

Why is that an advantage? I would preffer to stay away from dual tank valves and extra switches if I can. I don't plan to travel outside the city, so long range is not going to be an issue.

 

Stink. Dripping gas. Capacity. Emissions. Safety. The rear tank was mandated by federal law to improve the safety of these vehicles.

A repop is shorthand for a reproduced aftermarket part.

Search for wheelhouse notch. Tall drivers will want to move the seat back, and the tank is in no way blocking that.

 

Re pop, a reproduction new tank!

I am six ft tall so I have the seat as far back as it will go. My son is about 5'5 or 6 & he doesn't have any problem depressing the clutch fully.

 

At some point Jeep put adjusters under the factory driver's seat. I know all my intermediate CJs ('73, '75, '75) have had seat adjusters, and I kept the seat all the way back (5' 9" with 29" inseam). The intermediate seating position is more to the left, but I believe the position and brackets and pedal distance are otherwise unchanged. You could fit adjusters now, and if your son complains he's uncomfortable, go with the wheelhouse notch.

So, when I get to the point of setting the seats (I have none at the moment), should I get the ones that would fit an intermediate? I want bucket seats, not the originals. Anyways, I always thought about retrofitting whichever seats I get with sliders.

 

I know a 66 had them . I sold seat brackets with sliders . driver seat is only one with slider . a few years back . my 71 has them also . and didn't look any different

 

The Tuxedo Park MKlV ('64-'67) had a slider under the 2/3 drivers side seat from the factory. This may have been only used on the 4cyl/column shift version. The slider bolts to the standard base crossbar at front, and two separate risers that mount on the edge of the rear bed just behind the fuel tank. I believe the slider was unique as the lever protruded right by the gas fill tube.
I'm 6' tall, and never remember the seating postion being cramped or tight, but that seat has soft springs.

I will, obviously only need sliders on the driver seat. The passenger has no business pushing pedals and he/she better be comfy and grateful or can get off the damn jeep!

 

My Tux has a slider on the drivers seat, but it only goes back until it hits the fender well. I was 5' 8" but now I am 5' 6.5" so no problem it fits me perfect. My Son is 5' 11" he has no problem with it.
