Is this a stock Ross steering gear? If so, there's no mount at the floorboard, the steering gear bolts to the frame.

Shaun - derailing your post a bit here, but you did the conversion where you cut the worm gear off the end of the column and add on a u-joint? If so, would love to see some posts on how it went for you. I think its probably more work that other options, but I like keeping the original column.

No problem.. I cut off the worm and shaved down the shaft to fit into a u-joint coupling. I read of that way a long time ago but what other ways or options are you talking about to convert to PS with original column? I’ll try to get pictures. Just painted my Jeep summit color gunmetal metallic the past weekend. Now doing small things/ accessories and then to wiring and hydraulic clutch.. still work to be done.. busy busy busy.. firefighter, two kids, so time has been lacking with 62 JEEP..

This thread should probably move over to CJ5 tech rather than here under restoration/reasearch. This page is for keeping things stock as it came from the factory. Mondfications are better discussed over in tech.

I'm going to use the original column as well. I have most of the parts, I'll post pics when I get it put together.

If you guys can locate an intermediate ('72-'75) column, or a Postal column, it is nearly a bolt-in swap using all stock parts. It saves a bunch of fabrication time, is safe, and looks like the original column from the interior.
    Just saying.

I welded a round flange I made around the bottom of the column, then bolted it to the floor.

Typically I cut a section out of piece of tube, welded flats with bolt holes to clamp on the column, attached to flat plate bolted to floor.

You can also get some nice parts from Speedway and Summit if you don't fab your own.

I am in the process of using the original column and cutting the top and bolting the round ross mounted flange to the floor with fabricated plates sandwiched to hold the bearing.
I do not have it quite figured out yet as the horn wire is a problem.

The intermediate CJs have a simple triangular bracket that bolts to the lower firewall. It has a built-in clamp to secure the column.

An intermediate column is longer than a postal jeep. I tried an intermediate column and I would have had to butcher the left side motor mount or build a shaft with 27 u joints. The shorter postal column allowed me to run the shaft right over the motor mount.
    YMMV

Speedway Motors has exactly what you are looking for. Lots of mounts and joints.

    this is what I used
    Nostalgia Steel Steering Column
I had to shorten it, but they sell shorter ones. I just estimated incorrectly. I have been using it for a couple years and its perfect. The splines for the hub are a bit loose and bother some people, but I don't even notice. YMMV.

I even machined my original 2A steering wheel to bolt to the hub. Its really awesome. The only real drawback is the lack of a town button. i am sure if it tried hard enough I could figure out something, but I just don't care all that much and they didn't bother me with inspection...

you wouldn't get a pass here
that's why you see so many aftermarket horn buttons on old cars and trucks out here

the biggest advantage with a later column is turn signals that actually cancel :D

Yeah, I really should put a horn button on the column. I have the relay and all that, but no one cared. I just yell at people real loud instead of using the horn to get people to look away from their phones at lights.

I used a tilt column in this jeep before. The cancelling turn signals are nice, but I really like the retro look of the original steering wheel. Its awesome to use one finger in the giant wheel with power steering to parallel park.
