Timgr, thank you for the PN and picture.

Mike, That's pretty cool they're only 4 off and the same color. It's being returned to stock. I'm not the one working on it currently though as I'm not in the US at the moment. I got it from the 2nd owner who bought it from the original owner that he went to high school with. They got it with dealer installed warn hubs, Ramsey PTO winch (winch missing, PTO present), and Meyer hard top (AMC approved accessory sticker).

If it helps any I checked out a ren II with a MEYER top and it had the swing out tire rack. This jeep looked as thou the top and rack where dealer installed.
Couldn't open rear hatch with spare in stock position. It was a really nice jeep all stock that grandson inherited from original owner.Eastern Oregon ranch jeep with no rust .

Interesting, mine appeared to have a swing out carrier on it at one point until it was welded solid and turned into a cooler carrier. The back hatch on my top's been bolted shut, and all the other hardware removed.

If it has a swing-out carrier, it's a Whitco, like above. The carrier I showed was used on the '72 Renegade with the solid back panel. I thought the solid back panel carried over from the '71... maybe not. Certainly the PN of the carrier 986351 is from the time of the takeover, maybe even late 60s. A '72ish PN would be maybe 535xxxx or another 7-digit number.

My '71 has a solid back panel. I was under the impression that Ren IIs came with a fixed tire carrier. A lot of stuff has been messed with on mine. It would make sense to have a swing out with a meyer hard top because otherwise you can't use the rear hatch, which is I believe why mine was bolted shut and had the rest of the rear hardware removed.

I have an RII that P.O. installed an aftermarket mechanical pressure gauge. The wiring is intact from firewall to the engine block location as is the underdash wiring. I've sourced an original gauge and prior to installing I]'d like to verify if and where the resistor is/should be found. He's a couple pics of engine side harness. It appears the oil and ammeter gauge wiring was it's own separate harness of 3 wires (two yellow and a violet) that are taped and run through the grommet with the balance of the wires. firewall wiring.jpg firewall wiring 2.jpg

This is very helpfu to have the dimensionsl. Re the color. I have the cowl portion yet the hood sides and center stripe for some reason removed and painted over, remnants of the center stripe remain under the hood. The rear of the side stripes, but not the front are rolled to the inside of the hood. All remnants are definitely black. I've seen the charcoal subject discussed here. Came across this photo and the word charcoal trim is inserted after the color, yet the center "ridge" is described as low-gloss black.
Just where does the charcoal come in? Did they decide to call black, charcoal?
Edit: I now believe the words charcoal trim refer to the pin-stripe inserts of the original upholstrey.
Both the original stripe remnants, including a portion of the painted center stripe under the leading edge of hood of our Ren II match the repro side stripes we bought that are black. The only trace of charcoal on the jeep is the vinyl seat inserts. See pics in related post "Renegade ll - March 1971 Reference Photos" in the "Early Jeep Restoration and Research section.

Not to kick a dead horse, or perhaps bring it back to life, but I purchased the CJ5 that this thread was started on some time ago. I can't remember why I decided to look up the VIN online, perhaps to see the differences between the one I bought and my father's '65, but I was pretty excited to stumble upon this forum. I've recently began working on it again and found the Renegade racing decals on the hood, covered up by that god awful puke-colored paint. I'm still a bit confused on the identification parameters of a Renegade 1, however. There seem to be things that don't correlate to what was discussed on this thread. For example, the paint and trim codes are 135 and 291, respectively, which would equate to Omaha Orange paint and charcoal vinyl upholstery. Also, there is not a passenger or driver side indention in the body where the side marker lights would go, however, the marker lights are present. Anyway, I just thought it fitting to post about it here if anyone wanted some closure :p . If anyone has any questions or information, maybe I can learn a thing or two.

I well remember that particular Jeep and I really wanted to buy it bad.
It's the earliest known surviving Renegade I

Correct me if I'm wrong but..
As I recall it was built in Sept of 1969 and was in very good shape excepting his foolish attempt doing a "spring over".
I chewed Chris out for that one.
He had no idea what he was messing with... Ha Ha ! Serious Jeep history !
Was waiting for Chris to locate the title otherwise I'd have bought it for sure.
But I'm really glad you own it now and not me.
I'm just way too busy building on my flatfender jeeps.
I'm a flatty kinda guy and there is no other cure for that ... but a Renegade I could sure hold a flatty guy over for a very long time....

You ever get the original title for it ?
We need to get together sometime and talk JEEP.
You doing the fall reunion up in Fulton ?

There was no way that I was keeping those springs how they were. Sadly, the original HD springs were too beat up to repair. Many components would have had to be replaced due to neglect and abuse, and i thought it might have been too costly so I bought an aftermarket set. I'll probably end up getting another set or remake the old ones in the future. I also decided to convert the front d27 to disc brakes using the 70s chevy parts method. I may end up reverting that back as well. Most everything else I'll try to keep stock for obvious reasons.

I've been to a few reunions, mainly to search for parts. Now I'll have to get this thing together to take, eventually. The title is a long process as well, but it's coming together.

I wanted to buy that jeep laying in pieces in his garage... even before I saw the body stored away in his small garage.
If nothing else knew it had a lot of really good parts on it.
After I finally saw the body I put 2 and 2 together then figured out it was Renegade I.

So I took down the serial number and was flabber gasted how early it was.
Like August or September 1969 at the very latest.

That original Kelly full hard cab did a great job of preserving the tub.
You plan to put the Kelly cab back on it ?
I would cause that thing reeks of a major Jeep milestone.
The switch from Jeeps as workhorses to become the very first SUV's.
And SUV's are currently dominating the auto industry some 49 years later.
    That's amazingly impressive !

So I have a huge dilemma. I recently purchased a 1 owner 1971 CJ5 (Vin 8305037 373185) (Build Date Mar 1971) from the original owners son. Original owner passed away 18mo ago. His dad did not keep any of the original docs to prove a Ren1 but he has pics of him in 1974 riding in the jeep as a child. It is orange with white "Renegade 1" striping, orange carpet, rear tailgate, spare tire carrier swingout, 15X8 Kelsey Hayes rims (stamped on inside of rims), Visors, HD springs 12&12, 22" 3 core radiator right output, 5 blade fan, 55amp alt, amp and oil pressure gauge in dash with keyed holes, boxed frame. I have verified front and rear axle to be D44 and D27 with 4.88 and 4.89 gearing with flanged axles.

This CJ5 has all of the options per the (Ren1&2) parts research thread with the exception of the wiring harness, dash pad (edited I do have the holes in the windshield surround that match up the the mounting points for dash pad), 7 blade fan. So here I sit stumped, is it a Ren1? Did his dad actually purchase a fully optioned CJ5 and then put the Ren1 stripes on it? There have been other verified mid 71 build Ren1's with the tailgate etc, but it was inconclusive if they had the (holy grail) 7 wire double red wiring harness. There have also been discussions regarding 100% verifiable Ren1's that do not have the 7 wire or all of the Renegade specific parts? I wish that Jeep would have taken the same care they did with Vin plates and put the Build codes (battery firewall) stamped in metal as well, as of course, these are long gone on this one.

    Thoughts?

Does your frame serial number match the sticker on the dash? Do you have the engine oil pan skid plate? Heavy duty frame?

Zoomer beat me to it. The renegade has reinforced frame in front and skid plate and dash pad, which could just be missing in your case
