I was thinking of something like this except for a cotter pin release style. I didn't think it would be strong enough so I skipped posting the thought. Now that I see this product exists and it's super beefy... I think you should go this route.

    Holy Moly! I like those!!!

"in a Jeep a combination of permanently welded in sheet metal and some removable is an option that I am exploring in my build."

I also hadn't considered making a removable piece of the tub so the base plate of the cage can go thru the tub. I love this place!

    Thank you.

Tank is pressure and leak tested... and passed

I've got my brackets for mounting the center console on it. The piece of aluminum in the middle where the console attaches is thicker for more strength.

I bought a quart of the por15 gas tank sealer. I decided to coat the inside with it just for an extra measure of security. I can't believe it takes 96 hours to dry.

Pulled my battery tray out to do a little refurbishing

Someday my entire engine bay will be black, but not today.

Ok status update. Tank is installed and holding gas and with Focker's help I started the Jeep for the first time in about a year. Runs great. Power brakes are amazing. Power steering not so much, can't get it working correctly yet. You may have seen my other thread in the tech forum. I was a little bummed about the power steering so I decided to stop on that and do something more creative. I went to work on my center console.

The lip on the bottom fits snug with the aluminum box so the lid can't wiggle around on there. I will eventually stain it to look more like the cup holder thing and put a piece of rubber in the bottom of the low area. Just wanted a place for my phone and other random things that would otherwise be rolling all over the tub.

Here's the tank installed. I need to make a piece around the filler tube where it comes through the tub.

Oops, I skipped some stuff on the tank. I don't want to spare you any exhausting boring detail so here ya go.

I welded on nubs... or something to the bottom.

And I bought six rubber plug stopper things. They are heavy duty but still sorta cushion-ey and drilled a hole in them

Then fit them over the nubs. The tank sits on those and it's strapped into the tub in the middle. I don't want to subject the tank to flex and this was the best way I could figure to do it.

And as a precautionary measure I decided to coat the inside of the tank with this stuff

That stuff is awesome, it finds it's way into the tiniest of spaces. I didn't have any leaks but thought this couldn't hurt. I poured it in and tipped the tank in every direction every half hour.

Out with the old wiring, it was pretty bad and kinda hacked together. Now that the brake light switch is inside the tub I had to change it all up anyway.

    In with the new

I decided to run all the wiring to the rear of the Jeep inside the tub, just under the lip.

I also picked up this cool 4" LED brake light. It fits perfectly in the center of the spare tire. It's super bright, it light up the whole driveway tonight when I pulled back into the garage.

The wiring comes thru the inside of the carrier and runs down the inside of the spare tire rack, it's all tucked away nicely. This picture taken before it was put inside the tire carrier tubing.

Then drove it to the gas station, put gas in and broke down pulling out of the gas station. It took a bit to figure out what was wrong, lost all power to everything. Lights, ignition etc. Turns out the wire that goes from the battery to the starter was not secured down and came in contact with the new exhaust. It welded itself to the exhaust and grounded out the entire system. Yanked the wire off, bump started it and made it back home. I guess I never noticed how close the new exhaust was to that old wire.

Power steering, power brakes, exhaust and all the other mods I've done so far seem to be working well. Took this quick vid while I was tearing out the old wiring. I do like my third brake light, for some reason it makes me happy. The Jeep is covered in dust from sitting for a year.

I drove it some today and I'm getting used to the power brakes, it was pretty sketchy at first. I'm in love with the power steering, that's just really sweet. The exhaust is a little on the loud side for me, wish there was more room to get some bigger mufflers in it.

You're lucky there wasn't a fire! I almost burnt my '70 to a crisp with that same problem. Complete meltdown and fire.

Glad to hear everything is making you happy!

I made an aluminum plate to make my gas tank hole look less ghetto.

I've been struggling to like the looks of my wide track front axle, it's just too wide. I thought maybe I would like it better if the back matched a bit closer. I found some 1.5" spacers for $27 with free shipping... yes, $27. I'm guessing somebody made a mistake on the amazon listing but they showed up a few days later for $27 :clap:

I installed them today and I've decided I really like the back spacing now, but I still hate the front.

    The front looks like this.

It looks fine to me from all angles but the front

74_Renegade brought me a narrow track Dana 30 that he bought for the brakes. It's actually a wide track that someone cut down to narrow track width (or close to it). It will need a lot of work tho. It has some really funky SOA setup on it right now and I need to pull everything off mine to install on this. Locker, knuckles, brakes etc etc.

I'm trying to decide if I do all that or get some matching rims for the front with more backspace.

    Yup. Looks terrible.
Lemme know when it's ready for pickup. :p

I honestly don't see what you're seeing. I think it looks great. See if it grows on you. Or stop looking at it from the front. :D

FWIW, you will instantly regret going narrower when you lose some of your turning radius from your tires hitting the springs.

Get the proper backspaced rims for the back and avoid the wheel spacers.

Seeing it in person I know what you are seeing, but I honestly think you'll get used to it. The increased turning radius, not rubbing the springs is pretty awesome.

No, it's all good. I actually bought some steel today to start cutting out the spring perches. I'm trying to come up with something like the Varg has except spring under with recessed u-bolt nuts that won't drag on the rocks. I'll either put them on the narrow track or the wide track when it comes time. I like the idea of getting the 6 degree caster built into the perches and ditch the caster wedges.

I guess you guys have talked me into keeping the wide track on for a while. I'll weld some shock mounts on, get some shocks and then start driving around in it and see if it grows on me. Maybe the shocks will take up some of the wide open ugly space between the frame and wheel and it won't look so bad.
