Would this have been color matched or chrome?

The grab bar was an option most dealers installed. The vast majority were painted black, though chrome was available as an option too. Many of the Tuxedo Parks had the chrome grab bar installed, but mine didn't come with any grab bar when my dad bought the Jeep new. Mine did come with the chrome bolts and fender washers behind the dash though.
The current polished Smittybuilt grab bars are the exact pattern as the original Kaiser supplied bars, and looks almost like chrome.

Thanks. Interesting, I would have thought it was standard equipment but explains why mine doesn't have one although it will soon.

I have an OEM cap that was placed in the hole where th bolt goes if you don't have the bar. Only one and it appears it was always there. Seems odd that it would have the cap on a utility vehicle,

Below is a shot of the one in my '67 that was installed by the original owner. As the photo shows, the right side mounting screw replaced one of the dash panel to cowl bolts. The dimension between the mounting holes measures approx. 17-1/4" center to center.

I don't know if this is an OEM Jeep grab bar, or if it is OEM, whether or not it's mounted in the usual way. Any thoughts?:

As Donny says, both black and chrome. It's always been an accessory, IIRC either factory option or dealer installed. Where I worked, they never ordered a grab bar from the factory, since it was so very easy to install one if the customer wanted it. The Jeeps were delivered with plugs in the holes, so you did not even need to drill to install a grab bar.

    Usual location -

Helpful in getting in and out too. The driver has the wheel to grab.

Thanks for the info, Tim. However, my '67 (built in Aug '66) does not have a left-hand mounting hole anywhere near where yours is shown.

I'm wondering if on the '66-67's, the grab bars were typically mounted like mine is. Anyone else have a CJ5 or CJ6 in these year ranges with an OEM grab bar?

Here's a photo of a '67 Tux without a grab bar that was submitted awhile back by another member. Note the bolt head visible just above the glove box lid and next to the passenger side windshield clasp. My '67 has a (factory) hole in this same location, but it has no corresponding hole 17-1/4" to the left that would allow the mounting of a grab bar without drilling.

Interesting. I've always used both factory holes.
    This is a 67 CJ6.

We're getting all kinds of interesting anomalies here. I've never seen a dash like Maury's with only one factory drilled hole. Every dash I have seen is like Mark's (green?) CJ6, and red Tux with both bolt holes.
The other anomaly is Mark's red 64/65 Tux without the column shift and dash cutout for the shift linkage to pass through. As far as I have ever known, every MKlV Tux prior to the introduction of the V6 in late '65 had a column shift. The red Tux has a single lever shift transfer case, and all the chrome bolts fastening the dash, 1/3-2/3 seats, etc, just no column shift!
At least we are pretty sure where the grab bar mounts.

Look at the picture again of Maurey’s jeep. The factory original right side hole is visible just below the bar. The other is probably covered by the speaker.

My '67 has bolts where Mark's bars are mounted. I have a grab bar that will go there when I put it all back together.

Actually, the left mounting hole for the grab bar, if it were mounted in the normal position, would be about 2" diagonally above and to the right of the light switch knob. You can see this relationship in the photos Ojgrsoi posted above.

These are photos of a '66 Tux. Note the left end of mounted OEM grab bar, and its proximity to the light switch:

Here's a better photo of my dash showing the light switch knob. The right grab bar mounting hole is visible just above the glove box (with a black rubber plug in it). The speaker cover is several inches to the right of where the left mounting hole should be:

Here's a photo of the dash on my brother in law Fred's '67 CJ5. It was built in November 1966, about 3 months after mine was built in August of '66. Though it has a non-Jeep door handle installed by a prior owner rather than an OEM grab bar, you can see the painted metal covers over both the left and right grab bar mounting holes:

My guess is that there was either 1) a mistake made on the assembly line when the holes in my dash were punched that resulted in the left mounting hole being left out, or 2) the left hand mounting hole was welded shut for some unknown reason.

Karl, I you're getting your grab bar from Tim's 71 part-out, that is a vintage aftermarket piece made by Olympic Auto Accessories (pt #010-100) from back in the early 1980's. I recently pick one up off eBay, still in the box. I still prefer the original style, but the Olympic one should fit and funtion fine.

Is the OEM grab bar supposed to look like a round tube that was flattened on the ends (and bent)?

I've seen some that appear to have mounting tabs welded onto the ends, aaand also purport to be genuine/OEM style. [IMG]

I was energetic enough to go out and look at the grab bar on the A1, but not energetic enough to take a pic.

Far as I know, all A1s came with the grab bar. Mine is set up differently than any of the civvy models pictured so far. The right side grab bar bolt is located about 4-5" to the right of the right side windshield latch. So the bar offset straddles the latch on the passenger side. This puts the CJ5 version about 6-7" towards the drivers side from the military version. The bar also evenly straddles the big data plate found on the A1s. There were no other holes in the dash to suggest a different mounting scheme.

This was probably done to avoid the A1s instrument cluster, which is quite a bit larger than the CJ5 has.

The bar itself looks similar to the other bars pictured.
