My '67 (which was built in August 1966) has this manufacturer's label / plate attached to the firewall just above the battery. It appears to have been rather poorly "touched up" by a P.O., probably with a Sharpie.

Are reproductions of these plates available anywhere?:

That Willys/Kaiser Jeep sticker is reproduced by a European eBay seller, maybe in the Netherlands (Dataplatesfor U ?).
Its listed on our USA eBay Motors pages.
Maury, is that a plaque held on with screws? The ones I am familiar with are self-adhesive foil stickers.

    Thanks, Donny and Focker.

This is the closest one I've found on eBay so far, which is indeed made by Dataplates4U:

FIREWALL PAINT TRIM & WILLYS JEEP CORPORATION DATA PLATES CJ-3A CJ-3B CJ5 KAISER | eBay

I've worked with the owner, Robert de Rutyer (who is a great guy) before, and will email him to see if he has or can make an exact replica. I'll also contact Bear Creek.

My original does appear to be a plate screwed to the firewall. I've never taken it off, but I'll try to remove it tomorrow.

That is the one I remembered seeing on eBay, though I see it doesn't have Kaiser on it. I will check to see what my original one looks like from my '64 Tux. Mine is a heavy aluminum "foil" with adhesive backing. It was heavy enough to not distort when carefully detaching it from the firewall. That paint and trim tag looks correct too, only how do you enter the code numbers correctly? It would be great to have correct detail items like these.

I heard back from Robert at Dataplates4U already, and sure enough, he has correct reproductions of this plate (below). He's sending me one for $16 shipped from The Netherlands.

These plates were, as Donny noted above and Robert confirmed, originally glued to the firewalls rather than being screwed on. The mounting screws attaching mine, along with the "touching up" and the yellow (hi-liter enhanced?) background, were apparently added by a prior owner. I plan to mount the repro plate to the firewall using a heavy-duty double sided black tape.

Donny, where was that paint and trim plate shown in the eBay link above originally mounted, and do you know what years those were used on? My '67 does not seem to have one, at least not anymore. BTW, I believe that for an extra fee, Robert will stamp the plates he sells using the correct fonts with codes provided by the buyer.

Thanks again for your help, Donny & Focker!

Maury, Glad you found the tag with Kaiser on it, I was pretty sure I have seen that one available too. I'm up at my Mom's for a few days, so don't have access to me Jeep or detail photos. The trim tags were usually located in the vicinity of the manufactures tag on the passenger side firewall. I have seen some as low as the lap-seam halfway down, and as high as a couple inches below the grill stay rod mount. My '64 and '66 have had both tags. I have at least one of my trim tags at home, and want to verify the font, and whether printed or embossed. I would mount both the tags with a contact cement type adhesive, such as 3M weatherstrip adhesive as this is how they were fastened originally. I remember seeing brushstrokes on the back of the tags.

Originally glued with something like Goodyear Pliobond (no longer originates with Goodyear, apparently). Similar to the yellow weatherstrip adhesive.

Both of my tags were laying in the old battery tray when I took the battery out. If you look near the left side center of the photo you can see the outline where the were originally placed.
My tags were badly scarred by what appears to have been an exploding battery by a previous owner.

    Thanks Ojgrsoi....that is very helpful.

Here's a photo of the old, "touched-up" original plate with the new one that arrived today from Robert De Rutyer at Dataplates4U:

If anyone has any other photos (or links to photos) showing one of these tags mounted, please post them. My original tag was in a different location than Ojgrsoi's photo indicated, and I'm wondering if they may have been mounted in different locations on the firewall over the different model years.

The photo I originally submitted above is a 65 CJ5A built in late 64.

Below is the best shot I can find of my 67. If you squint real hard and use your zoom you can imagine that the plate might have been above the battery as your photo indicated. [IMG]

Below is my 70 and you can see what I think might have been the paint code location. This was manufactured post Kaiser so the Willys tag may not have been used. The special order sticker is below that. I haven't figured out how to remove the paint without damaging the sticker.

Hopefully someone will post something better.

I think the locations of the two tags changed when the battery got moved to the firewall from the chassis mount. I know some F-head CJs had the trim/paint tags low enough the battery would obsure them.
    Can anyone document this?

Googling through images of CJ5s, I eventually found the photo below that I think pretty well pins down the general factory mounting location of the Willys / Kaiser Jeep Corporation plates during the 1966-67 model year time frame. The plates were located above the battery tray, beside where the upper horizontal bracket supporting the battery hold-down bolts onto the firewall.

This photo shows the original plate in a well-preserved 1966 Tux Park (1966 WILLYS-KAISER JEEP Cj5 TUXEDO PARK MARK IV - Vintage Motors of Sarasota Inc.):

Maury, Have you found any photos of the trim tag locations? I think the later CJs with firewall-mounted batteries have trim tags placed close to level with the top of the battery, and frame-mounted battery CJs had trim tags mounted a few inches lower, where they would be behind the battery of the later models.

I've posted this before - it's from the '72 TSM. That was the last year for this style of paint/trim tag.

Donny, I haven't found any indications of that so far for the '66-'67s. Do you (or anyone else reading this) know during which model year the paint / trim tags started to be used?

As far as when they started this 65 Tux with a late 64 build date had the tags installed as shown. Battery was a firewall mount. The tray was a mess so I used the late chrome tray shown in the photo.

By coincidence I just put a photo in my media file a few days ago showing my battery and trim tag. The tag is definitely not even with the battery.
