Tricky question as early on there was no actual radio for a CJ5. Dealers could install aftermarket units, the Motorola & Bendix units were most common & eventually were sold with "jeep" labeled face plates.

Mine is a 65 and it says "Jeep" on the dial. I understand it is probably a dealer installed option/
The dial is surrounded by a chrome plated plastic rim That is pitted.
I will take a picture in the next day or so and post it.
The next question is what is an appropriate antenna for that vintage radio and jeep?

Here is my radio. I wish I didn't have the hole in the dash. It works fine. IMG_20170802_103815133.jpg

AM reception is best with the longest wire or rod you care to install. For a jeep I would try to find a spring loaded base with at least a 3 food rod.

That's a delux radio with the pushbuttons. Those were used in the Wagoneers back in the 1960s.

The only Jeep special equipment radio for a CJ that I recall, prior to 1976, was mounted under the dash. Consider section 15 in the '74-80 parts book. Radios are listed for the models 10-20-40 (Wagons and J-trucks) and supplied for warranty replacement only.

For '75, this illustration applies -

    upload_2017-8-5_14-8-5.png

This is what I remember, the speaker included in the cabinet. NB it does not apply to 1974, so I presume there was no such accessory available prior to 1975. The '76-on dash is perforated for a radio. Note that Jeep does not list a radio for this cabinet ... though they do show an in-dash mounting for earlier years -

Now, notice that they show no replacement speaker, they show no replacement radio, and there is no indication of where on the dash this would be positioned. So did they offer this from the factory? IDK.

On my '71, the dealer installed the oval speaker under the dash, facing down. The antenna was mounted on the passenger side, about 2.5" above the JEEP.

Don't forget an FM converter. Had one in my 5 when I first bought it. Tossed it in the trash at some point. Wish I still had it just because. Oh well. I could never hear the radio in the JEEP anyway. Nothing left of the system except a square hole in the dash.

My first Jeep, a 67, had a radio mounted under the dash, with the speaker in the bottom of the radio. Was AM only. Back in 1976 it was fine

I'm looking into a period-correct AM/FM antenna because my Jeep had a 14" 'rubber ducky' aerial installed...broken though before I purchased it.

A replacement rubber ducky for trail riding seems like a good idea and when stationary, one of them newfangled Firestik antennas for some real range and reception. They have twice as much wire as a typical whip antenna--the wire is coiled around a fiberglass mast.

All I need to do is find a base that accepts 3/8" x 24 threads...

Not quite that simple- not saying it's a bad antenna but increased wire does not necessarily equal increased performance, the actual "best length" for FM is about 30". And the statement "Good Bandwidth for those Fringe Areas" makes no sense at all, it's like saying your tires have extra width for a tighter turning radius. o_O

If you want reasonably period correct & reasonably bust proof get a proper antenna with a spring loaded base.

I like that one. That's a swivel base right, and can be positioned at various angles?
