Does anyone have experience with a winch like I have on this Renegade I bought. It has a JAHCO starter motor, 24v. It has a lever that appears to change from spooling in to out on passenger side of winch.

The previous owner mounted two batteries to power this winch. There are three solenoids, at least one relay, a switch mounted in grill and some switches mounted below dash. I haven't traced wires yet to figure his system out.

The winch has a welder type plug connection in the grill. The plug was disconnected when I bought the jeep. The inline fuse is for driving lights, up front, not the winch.

There are two nameplates on the motor. One tag says "Starter Motor" "Direct Current"; the other tag says "Starter Type" "Combination Electric Inertia-Direct Cranking" and "Model JH5F". I don't know if it works.

Does anyone know what this is from? Military? M38-A1?
Is there an advantage to using this old 24v winch, if it works, over a new 12v winch?
The batteries are wired into the Jeep in parallel. I am assuming the solenoids, relays and switches change this to running in series to power the winch.
Any help with how to make this winch work would be appreciated.
This Jeep also has a small three cylinder, war surplus air compressor that looks to be 28v, the compressor power wire was cut. Another thing to investigate.

That looks to me more like a 24V military wiring connector than a fuseholder.

I'm not aware of M38A1 ever having an electric winch. But I recall some mention of using surplus 24V bomb hoists.

I have a home made winch using a 24V bomb winch motor that looks like your motor. I will go take a closer look at it and a picture if you like. Mine ran on 12V just fine. Mine uses 4 12V relays for power fwd and rev. Somewhere I have a diagram of the relay wiring but don't remember if I have one of the motor connection. Have been meaning to pull it back out a fiddle with it again. I was dragging big logs with it when in Oregon and I broke the 60 link chain in the gear drive box and just never fixed it.

A few things to update about this winch.
First, Pete L, you are right what I looked at and thought was a fuse is not. It is a connector.
Next, this winch is definitely home made. It is mounted between the frame rails on a couple of 'C' channels that have been welded in place. The drum is sandwiched between two 1 1/2" thick plates. The passenger side plate has a chain assembly with a steel cover. I haven't pulled that yet. chain runs from drum on bottom to motor on top. it looks to have a third shaft in between the two.
The lever I thought was fwd/rew is not. It has a collar that slides left and right engaging the drum to the gear assembly. Push the collar left to free spool, right to engage drum. The drum moves so freely I had just touched it and it moved enough that i had to fight the wire to engage the drum again.
I Have determined that this winch is used at 24 volts. The are three solenoids, one relay and so far I have found three switches.

One switch mounted in the grill, one mounted on the passenger radiator support and the third is an additional 'dimmer' switch on the floorboard. I don't know how it all works yet but the batteries definitely run in series when the solenoids are engaged.
The back of the motor has a lever that moves in about a 45 degree arc. Maybe a speed control?

I have some detective work to do.
    Good night and good luck.

To say the least. :D Do you have only one main power cable to the motor?

Yes, there only the one power cable. It has the connector with a socket mounted in the grill. (picture in first posting above)

With only one cable in, and the other polarity therefore always being ground, it would seem it can only be powered in one direction.

That is what I have found on a search of that motor. Single direction only. My suspicion on the relays are one relay for the motor and the other for the dual battery (isolator) set-up. My bomb winch motor has three power cables going into it. It does power in and out.

I had one similar to that. In my search for parts (brushes) I found out that lots of winches were made from milsurp aircraft starter motors...
