My new inner axle seals arrived yesterday. My father-in-law told me I should have ordered six because I'm going to ruin the first four trying to put them in. Are there any tips or tricks before I get into this?

Good question. I used a long piece of all thread thru the axle tubes with a washer the same size as the seal to press them in. I found no good way to hammer them in.

Your FiL is not far off. The seals can be a bitch. I recently used the above method, just be careful. The threaded rod method also sounds like a solid plan as it doesn't involve shock. I used a threaded method to put on pinion seals to avoid beating them up and warping them, thereby defeating the purpose.

    Focker,
Watching the utube vid above, my axle seals have no taper on the axle sides.
I removed the old ones, and now its just a flat surface. I removed the thingy thats in the axle tube to show you guys what i mean...

I just posted the video for reference. The technique might still work, but I think you need a helper. I didn't realize the bad language, sorry.

The threaded method might be better.

I figured it out. The wierd groove thing recesses into the axle housing the thickness of the seal. I need a helper to pound it in.

Used a 35mm socket and long pipe and a helper to install the inner axle seals. Just not sure installing the hubs...kinda stuck.
But the pumpkin is back together!!

hey @jeepstar - question for you. When you took out your Spider gears, were there any shims between the conical / thrust washers? The FSM says in N.18 b. (p. 299) to check the differential side gear clearance against the differential case, and add shims to each side if it is greater than 0.006". The side gear on the "top" (side away from the ring gear) wiggles back and forth and I can fit a 0.035" feeler gauge in there...but all my spider gears run smooth, no chips, marring, or pitting. I'd love to not have to replace them but not sure where to get these shims the FSM mentions, and 0.035" sure ain't anywhere near 0.006"....

Copy that... anyone know where to get them? Am I going to destroy the lock pin by tapping it out to check the washers?
