Mocked up my Ramsey R246R winch. I cut the plywood to simulate the 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 3/8 angles that Ramsey supplies. I did a lot of measuring before I drilled the plywood and this position is just right as far as the driveshaft is concerned.
I was going to buy the Ramsey angles and bolt them in, but they want $75 each. I understand they need to be procesion drilled to keep the winch parts all aligned, but $150 plus shipping is too much.
I have the original 'enclosed frame' but it is bent slightly which throws the bolt holes off and they don't line up with the winch mounting holes. I'm considering having it heated and straightened then drilling out the holes to the next size size ( 1/2inch ) so the the mounting holes in the mount would be 1/2 inch for 3/8 inch mounting bolts.
The other alternative is to make a drawing of the angles and have a machine shop quote them, just making sure they use hi strength steel.

    Looking for your opinions???
You think I'm over thinking this and the original frame would work just fine???

    Thanks

Don't sweat it- grab some 3 x 3 x 1/4 inch angle iron at your nearest metal supplier- the flat bar will not withstand the stresses without bending. The holes can be drilled without too much drama- it just takes a little care with layout, a center punch & step drilling.

That actually looks very similar to the Ramsey cradle.
I expect it could easily be reworked to fit.
Is your Jeep the F-134 or V6-225 ?

Yeah I suspected it was V-6 due to the low mounted winch position.

Is that frame made of 3/8" x 2" bar stock ?
With winch setting low inside the frame channel as shown; you gain additional strength from front bumper.
Front of winch cradle can be pushing directly behind the bumper.

    Oh O.K
That's definately a Ramsey factory mount you have there.
    And the correct fairlead too.
Those two holes on each side should fit direct to an M38-A-1 frame.
The M38 and M38-A1 frames had factory frame horn gussets. (boxing)
The factory boxing had qty. of 2 threaded lugs per side @ 1/2" NF thread.

When I bought this jeep the winch was not mounted, but was at one time using this frame. It fits between the cj5 frame rails and there were beefy bushings that fit between the winch frame and the web of the jeep frame. Like I said the frame is bent a little which throws the winch mounting holes just a little off. I can redrill the winch frame holes from 7/16 ti 1/2 and all the holes should line up with the winch threaded holes.. Maybe I should box the frame where the winch frame bolts in

Probably over thinking this. Bolt it all in and run it.

I would not oversize the winch cradle holes.
Yes you certainly should box the frame horns.
I suggest you straighten out the frame horns then box it exactly like an M38-A1
That way you can simply eliminate the big bushings you mentioned and the winch cradle will be a direct fit.
The M38-A1 frame is exact same width to match up directly with Ramsey cradle.

The 4 big bushings are also Ramsey parts.
They are only required with civilian CJ's.

Ok,thanks for all the info. I think I'll box the frame of the jeep, drill correct holes and attach winch cradle with grade 8 bolts and nuts. hard part will be finding someone with a torch to heat cradle and straighten. this is a 'fill in' project so no big hurry.
    thanks again.

Just checking on how your process went. I'll be doing a similar process in the spring (hopefully).
