Time For A Welder

Thanks everybody. I have pretty much abandoned the generator idea. I will talk to the landlord about running a plug. I know nothing about wiring. Would not feel comfortable trying it myself at this point.

This whole conversation may be a moot point after the phone call I got last night. My daughter is planning her wedding, so I may have just lost my welder budget!

Thought I would throw an update out here and thank everyone again for their help.

I was talking to Dad the other night and he said he can't remember the last time he used his old arc welder. It ts the same one I learned on. A Century if memory serves. 220V. He said I may as well come get it if I want it. I can also get his oxy-acetylene set up too.

So now I will have an arc welder that will handle anything thick or heavy I will ever get my hands on and oxy-acetyline for the thin stuff.

Now all I need is 220 to the garage. I will not have the portability I originally wanted but we have a 50 foot 50A extension cord we had built for our big fifth wheel RV that we used to full-time in. That plus the long leads will get me out the front or back door easily.

I may eventually pick up another mig or tig welder but this will get me a good start.

I built 95% of my 3B with a stick welder 20 years ago and never had an issue with a weld.

 

I think I finally figured out this picture thing, at least on my mobile. Here goes nuttin.....







Hope this works. What do you think about trying to run a mig welder? 120V or 210V?

I think your best bet is to call the manufacture of whatever welder your thinking of buying or using and provide him with the info on your generator and see what response you get.......

You might want to do the same on the Generator and call Honda and tell them what you have in mind...............

 

I don't think you'll find many welders that can run on 20 amp breakers.
Even 30 amp will be too low for anything but the smallest of welders.

If run from the generator I would certainly shy away from circuit board welders.
They are far more susceptible to power surge burnouts than the transformer type.

Small 240 volt welders will likely do just fine until you crank up the welding amperage.
So I'm suggesting a small transformer type machine that puts out less than 250 amps.

 

Great advice. I just bought a new Miller 211 (inverter) a couple months ago. Best little MIG I have ever owned when running on 220 house current. Tried running on generator power and had nothing but problems. I used a friends older transformer type 211 on the same generator and had no problem.
