The engine has not run since 1982 and the po had not got it running after installing it. Supposedly only has 10,000 mi on it. It's a 1979 even fire 231. I filled the cylinders with krol oil a week before we even barred the motor over by hand. We stuck a bore scope in the cylinders after a week and found nice shiny cylinder walls and pretty clean Pistons. We barred the motor over a couple times a day over the next 2 days. I changed the oil and filter then pulled the valve covers and with a priming tool /drill ran the oil pump until oil reached the rockers. I was surprised to feel the oil pressure build on the drill within 10 seconds spinning the pump.
We buttoned it up and stabbed the dizzy. First try it poped through the carb, 180 off. Re stabbed the dizzy and it fired right up.
There was a fair amount of smoke for the first 15 sec, but after that it cleared up and purred.

The carb is a temporary unit. It came on my jeep when I bought it. I think that he will prob go with FI or a mc2100.

Just for fun I picked up a 65-71 cj5 paint color chart. I was convinced that Steve's jeep was candle light yellow, but it turns out that it is spring green. [IMG]

We made some more progress on Steve's jeep over the weekend. The jeep came without the battery tray. I modified an offroad battery box to work. The brace that bolts on the firewall is attached to a stud welded on the underside of the box. It is rock solid to say the least.

The engine that came in the jeep is a 231 out of a 1980 Buick Century. The PS bracket was doubled as a smog pump bracket as well. A little sawzall and grinder time later we produced a pretty clean looking PS bracket.

Power steering box is mounted. We had to clean up some scabs installed by the PO. I forgot to take pictures from before. The bracket is an vintage advance adapters that came with the jeep. We added an extra ear for the 4 bolt box. Power steering hoses should be behind the grill.

We still have some holes in the frame to weld up.
Box is a yj pitman arm is a 68-72 chevelle. Steering angles are pretty good. When we install lift springs, we will do a tie rod flip as well.

Got a little more done over the holiday weekend.

Seam sealer will be applied before painting.

Welded firewall plate on the inside and outside. Also, you can see the steering column floor mount. We utilized the factory cage nuts to start and will be adding several more bolts to stiffen the floor board.

Pedal bracket to dash tie in. Tough area to weld even after wire wheeling off the paint.

Mock up of the steering wheel, seat and pedals in its final location. We still need to weld flat pedal pads on.

Always tough on a 5 because there is no strength in the dash. Good to pick up a little with the floorboard piece like you did.

Yes, there is no movement in the firewall. We will still be tying the pedal bracket to the column and base of the dash.

We picked up a parts jeep for both Steve and I to scavage parts for his project/ stash things away.
I forgot to take pre teardown pics, but it is a complete 67. Jeep Runs great. Satisfied Steve's Immediate need for tires, radiator, soft top channel, plus numerous other parts and pieces.
The jeep came with a very nice Kelly top and doors. Luckily it was not installed at the time of the accident.

Yes, it has a big old Thor winch on the front of it. It Looks like it may be off of a wrecker. Ill get pics when we remove it.

The story is that the hitch pin broke while the jeep was being flat towed. Rolled off a curve and into a tree.

Finished up with the modified YJ swinging pedals and moved on to finish up our power steering install. The steering box, pump and hoses are all straight from an 88 yj. The power steering pump bracket and pump pulley is from a 1980 Buick Century with a 3.8. It came out very clean. Our plan is to get the jeep reliable/ road worthy for this summers use and work all the bugs out. Hopefully next winter tear down, dustless blast, rust repair, paint and reassemble. At that point, we will fill in the PO's hack job on the grill.

All Done. I don't think it gets much cleaner than this. All off the shelf YJ parts.

Steve's jeep came to us really pretty rust free considering the area it came from. (sf bay area) The worst part of the whole thing was the soft top channel.
I managed to salvage the channel off of the rolled parts jeep.

I wasn't kidding about the rust...

After chiseling off the old channel, it was time to get our the grinder.
    Test fitting the new channel.

After lots of welding, grinding, wire wheeling both surfaces were clean of rust. I coated both pieces with rust encapsulator for good measure.

I shuttled the clamps down the frame as I welded 4 holes at a time.

I do a lot of grinding.....
A little epoxy black on the bare metal.

The whole window frame needs to be wire wheeled, rust encapsulated and painted. That will be happening later on. I have done my part for now.

Is the Kelly hard top a 2-door model? if it is, any interest in parting ways with it?

If you are talking about the back, it has the standard tailgate and lift glass.
