Have this idea that there is never enough fuel capability in a 2a , the tool box top under the passenger seat is in poor condition, new to me welder AND I had a beer when I thought this up. Now I think that I am NOT the smart guy now.
I traded for a 1943 F script MB fuel tank that needs the three parts polymer seal job for sport memorabilia. He was so happy that he gave me the second after market MB fuel tank free. What you may not know that half of a MB fuel tank sits in a well on the outer part on the frame, normally under the driver.
I want it under the passenger side. Standard 2a tanks are flat on the bottom like cj5 tanks, it is the fill neck tube orientation that is different thru the tub. The MB fuel tank fills from the top of the tank kind of like a motorcycle, no fuel neck issue.
I told myself that cutting the suspect floor from under the tool box out WAS acceptable. Make a well with new metal and carry on from that. Of course the devil is in the details, WHERE to cut? Yes I can fake it up by setting the tank where it "could" end up and chalk a line out and remove steel. Do you have experience doing this sort of thing? Thanks Boys Dale

Could a replacement driver side floor pan be made to work somehow?

I've thought about modifying a 2A tank by moving the filler neck and and sticking it through the side of the tub just like on the driver side. Sounds easy enough in theory but likely more difficult than it seems.

Keep us posted if you proceed. Interesting topic. I'm not sure how much of an issue may or may not arise with the fumes from the MB style tank.

They actually make right side tanks for Flat fenders.

It is a lot easier, and arguably safer, just to install a rear tank. I'm not sure what is available these days for "off-the-shelf" versions, but it is relatively simple to weld up one of your own and easily double the fuel capacity in a single tank. Also, IMO, much safer than a couple of jerry cans on your butt.

Not to mention that the under-seat tool box is VERY handy storage if you are actually using the Willys on trails.

That's the way I would go.

If you put in the MB tank & hack the floor for the well I think you're loosing a body mount.

Two body mounts would have to be moved to the inside of the frame as per the MB mounts

I just read this thread and don't have any thing to add to the suggestions since they are all good. Just to be a smart a$$ though, a Ford script tank would be a GPW tank and Willys would be the MB. ;)
