134 Fhead Surge While At Idle

    Glad you got it :)

    If I were you I'd do some research into the various PVC installations that were used over the years & determine what you need to make yours correct- that draft tube certainly isn't part of a proper setup.

    If the carb is loose then the nuts were never properly tightened after the last time the carb was off.

    No, let it breathe like it does now.

    Actually, with the engine running do you feel pressure coming out of it? Or by chance is air being sucked in?

    You don't have the original air cleaner setup, no big deal. The little filter is ok as is, and the same with the way the hose is now.

    Was 90 here, but we had a nice rain so it fixed that. :)

    After thinking on it you most likely will be able to plug that draft tube. Vacuum reading will probably go up.

    This engine is in your CJ, right?
    Some one has switched the valve cover or the whole engine was swiitched. That cover and those fittings and hoses going to it are for the early pickup and stationwagon motors.

    Glad to read you found the cause of your surging being the carb being loose, which was causing a vacuum leak.

    Suggestion - If you can and have the room. Connect the hose from the PCV valve to the breather cap on the intake valve cover. Move the filter to the line on the oil fill/dipstick tube. This will allow clean air to flow through the oil tube into the crankcase/block and then up into the valve cover. From the valve cover through the PCV valve into the opening below the carb upon which it will get mixed in with the gas/air from the carb and sucked into the combustion chamber of each piston during the intake stroke. take a look at this image:

    I'm not sure if the picture is from a service manual that covers your jeep. Based on the photos that you posted, this appears to be how it would have been set up at the factory. If the PCV system is working properly you will feel air being sucked in at the draft tube. My understanding of how the draft tubes worked was the air rushing by the opening created a vacuum that would pull the gases out of the crankcase/block and this design was used on the early models before they incorporated a PCV system. I could be off though.


    Glenn, that appears to be the piece that moves inside the PCV valve assembly to restrict the air flow. See above posted image.

    Assuming you follow 55_Willy's excellant advice above I would remove it & replace with an appropriately sized fender washer & gasket.

    I think the properly seated carb was the main reason it runs so much better :lol:
