My wife thinks my Jeep is "Old, stinky and dangerous." She's probably right.

However, she thinks a YJ or newer would be none of these things.

So, does anyone have or know of a YJ with a 6 cylinder engine that is relatively stock and unmolested that is for sale at a reasonable price? Seems like you can get a pretty nice one around here for 5-10 grand, but lots of them are 4 cylinders and/or have been clapped out.

I'd appreciate any and all leads, especially in the Northwest corner of the country.

    Thanks!

    - Ian

Yep. May as well hold out for a TJ. At least the suspension is substantially improved.

I like my '88 YJ because it's not a lot different than an early CJ5. :) Easy to maintain. Not stinky.

Definitely would want a six cylinder next time, the 2.5L is bare adequate on the highway.

The '94 4.0L YJ I bought for my son 18 months ago is great! Even with 33 x 12.50 tires it holds it's own on the highway. Off road it's done well in mild rocks, mud, snow and sand.... could use a selectable locker set though. Since I bought my T3C trailer, he's been using it to haul surfboards and bikes to the beach with no issues. An all around good rig that's NOT stinky!

I love my 4cyl. Is it a speed demon? Actually when it had stock 235 tires, it was kind of zippy. Then went to the 33s with the original 4.10s, it was slow. Upped to 4.88s and 33s and it ran nice. I can do 70+ on interstate. I am not going to pass people at will, and steep grades, i am down shifting and struggling at times on the really big grades. Now I am doing 35s and it still is not that bad. If i had the entire family in it, it will be a touch slower. but runs just fine. Mine does stink, exhaust will always find me in an open to vehicle. I got rid of the dana 35 for a Toyota 8" in the rear, but still running the Dana 30 in front. IT is not a CJ but i do not try to pass it off. The YJ springs are much more comfy than my old CJ springs. :)

And it has the square hadlights, but i am fine with them anymore, i learned to accept. Plus there are not as many YJs at the jeep meet and greets so i enjoy being a bit different. :)

My jeep stinks. It burns the oil that drips off the valve covers onto the exhaust manifolds. It also occasionally smells like hot gear oil. The exhaust smells a tiny bit rich. I like that, I like that a lot actually. Its also loud and the windshield rattles. It pops and crackles when I let off the gas. Yeah, its not for the feint of heart... its for ME! Anyone that doesn't like it sure don't have to ride.

I have a 4cyl '95. The biggest weakness I've found has been the ax-5 Trans. I've had the yj's since new, not abused by any means. However on 3rd transmission at 176k

Yeah, I lost the bearings in my ax-5 at under 100K.

The four cylinder is ideal around town and in the woods. But on the interstate I have to flog it pretty hard, and in a headwind it can be a problem.

That is an '88. I think later years had more power, and I had no problem at all with power in my four cylinder Cherokee. ('94)

So, basically it runs like an old sherman tank. Might just call it Sherm?

Solved my problem. Bought a new Hyundai. Keeping the stinky dangerous Jeep. Winning.

Stay away from the Puget transmission. They suck.
