Yes I'll get an M38a1 manual.
Today was a day for little jobs and while tidying up I noticed a red wire hanging down from behind the dash.
Gently pulling it towards me it made contact with the body.
Yes you guessed it, it was live and it knocked out my indicators and a rear side light.
Tracing the wire back ,it came from the volt gauge.
Where this wire should connect to I have no idea.
    Two steps forward etc.

That wire from the voltage gauge should not be hot with key off. Did you mean amp gauge?

I was just thinking (Yes I know, thats dangerous for me) that when my Mechanic was delving blind behind the dash, he might have snapped a live cable going to the ingition switch.
It was a bit frayed I noticed when I attached my wiper motor wires wires.
If thats the case, is there a live wire from the amp gauge to the ignition switch?
    Clutching at straws here!

Just about everything "live" (except the starter) passes through the amp gauge first, so yes.

    Mine doesn't look like that.
Mine is threaded like gauges with nuts to tighten the terminals

    No terminals are free.
Like I said, this loose wire is connected to the ignition.
I dont know where it is supposed to connect to.
All I know is that when it touched the body it blew my turn signals and a rear side light blew too.

It is about 1foot long either badly cut or pulled.
It doesn't have any frayed wires sticking out

If it is hot then it is connected to the battery side of the ignition switch...that would be for something that you want power to without turning the key on. The brake lights are the number 1 thing you want to be that way.
I get the idea that you have a keyed ignition switch? Maybe that wire went to something the previous owner removed? Maybe an auxiliary light? That's anybodys' guess where that wire goes. It seems that without that wired connected to anything your friend had all of your lights working correctly, correct?
