Willys Motors, They are for real, I own one. VIN #8305017360056. It was first puchased in Colorado Spings, and the owner took delivery of it on 8-15-1969 from Johnson Pontiac GMC Jeep. It came with the original envelope (post marked 8-18-69) with the owners manual, air polution manual and maintenance plan manual which has the owners (Roy) signature,VIN # date of delivery, home address and a stamp of Johnson Pontiac Inc. When I contacted Roy about the Jeep, his first statement was that it was a special jeep, a "462" model. His best friend (Dave) worked for the dealership, and called him to come down and see it. Roy purchased it that day and drove it home. Roy went with me to pick it up in Woodland Park from the fella he sold it to. He had not seen it since 1999, and could not beleive the 2nd owner(John) had painted the outside blue but the interior was still President Red. The seats are red and white striped with the narrow striped patteren of 1969. Roy said that all "462" exteriors were red with solid black, solid red, black and white stripe or red and white stripe seats. Options on the "462" were the same as the Renegade 1, except for the color, no sun visors or dash pad. Items the "462" has that the Renegade 1 did not, were full size stainless hubcaps on H70x15 Goodyear Polyglass Red Line tires and a tapered not a flanged axle. I hope to have it back in running condition with a new red paint job by August, so we can take it back to C.S. for a few trail rides with Roy and Dave. I am sure there is another "462" that is owned by "OverEngineered", exactly like mine with black striped seats. He still has the white Whitco top on his, original paint, 28,000 miles and a Goodyear spare! He plans to bring his to C.S. as well. By the way, his VIN # is 8305017360041, 15 before mine! And tell Bill N., hi.

I'm glad to know where one of them was delivered. The dates you provided align quite well with the sales documents, but not yet with the engineering records. That should help in narrowing things down though. It was not uncommon for them to build a couple of 'specials' based on special sales orders before they build production versions.

When you say Woodland Park, did this belong to Dale Brinkmeyer?

I'm headed to Dallas today, and maybe Austin or San Antonio next weekend.
Any Jeep stuff to be seen there?

I'l be sure to say Hi to Bill.

When you get back to Colorado Springs, give me a shout. I'd love to see your Jeep and hit some trails too!

Will do, plan on staying 3 days and picking Roy and Dave's brain.
They started the Rocky Mt 4 wheel drive club in the 60's and have some great stories!

Dale ran Dales Jeep Parts in downtown colorado springs for many years. I was too young to have done business there but I think that's where my dad got the Warn overdrive and Ramsey PTO winch on his Jeep.

Does anyone know what the paint and trim #s would be for the 462?
I have been told mine might be one but I never looked into it.
Paint code is 226 and trim is 291.
    Build date of October 69.

Paint is President Red, Trim is Charcoal for yours. The 462 was built before Sept 69 and would have been 226 for paint and one of 4 trim codes.I have a Renegade 1 built in Oct 69 serial # 8305017361663, how close is that to yours?

Mine ends in 938 so 275 built between the two.
The reason my friend thought it was a 462 was the gauge locations and the 13 leaf springs. Also has the skid plate on the oil pan but no sign of the front bumper ever having chrome on it.

They did not come with chrome bumpers, some pics show a red cj with a renegade white stripe and a Commando front bumper. What type of gauges are they?

Oil and amp gauge are located lower left of the steering wheel.
The original paint was red but there's been a few different colors added over it.
As far as the front bumper it just looks like a normal CJ bumper...or what's left of it. That I know is original because it's riveted on.

What brand of gauges and what are there ranges? Do you have a flanged or tapered rear axle? Are there any signs of a side mounted spare tire and do you have a swing out tire carrier?

Mine was built between you two, 61782, 119 after fctex.

Are the gauges for the 462 the same as the Renegade I?

Gauges look to be factory , oil runs 0-80 an amps goes from +/- 40.
Looks to have had the side mounted spare.
4:88 gears with a flanged rear.
I have the rear axle out now and replaced it temporarily with one out of an M38 but it has posi although the differential didn't look like anything special when I had the cover off.

I can't seem to get the picture thing to work on here anymore.
There is a picture of it on the ECJ facebook page though.
I'm not entirely sure about the spare tire carrier. There may have been a swing out on it at some point but I don't see any mounting points.
The Jeep had a platform on top and a ladder running up the back so people could stand up top and pick peaches or pecans or something.
