Quick question. Does the rear drum go on the inside or outside of the hub? My jeep has the studs pressed into the drum first and the hub is outside. I have seen pics of the hub with the brake drum on the outside. Which way is correct?

    thanks

Not that it couldn't have been both ways from the factory, but I don't think I've ever seen it like you're describing.

The hub should have a centering ring that the drum slips over to keep it centered. Yours is just "lug-centric"?

Yes, the drums go inside the hub. You need a hub puller to get to the shoes. All stock D41's that i have ever seen with the stock junk death brakes are like this. The drums should have a feeler gauge slot cut into them too to adjust the heel toe adjusters.

for the dana 41 mine was originally as 47v6 says. drum was inside the hub and had the feeler slots. when I found I needed to replace my hubs I bought newer style hubs and drums and converted mine to the slightly newer design where the drum is outside the hub and is held on with 3 screws. way easier to service in the future.

so either style would work but original was drum inside the hub, so that you would have to remove the hub to service the brakes.

yup. Dana 41 right there. I didn't know you could convert to the cj5 style hub/drum set up. I would throw those pieces of junk right out asap. Check endplay on the axle shafts and axle shaft bearing while its apart. If you're going disk up front, I would go for either 10" drums back there or the way better 11". Those stock brakes are really not good and not easy to work on.

The factory D44 in my '48 has the same, early style 9" brakes.

Do your drums fit all the way under your backing plate? I have it all bolted up and the drums are just about even with backing plate edge. The layer drums go under the lip.
