I've hinted to Shaun by PM that his jeep is a can-o-worms for ID --be absolutely sure of his Frankenjeep identity before preceding to any change. He needs to become "his custom jeep" expert and draw his best/"solid" conclusion before even considering--if at all- confusing registration changes/changers.

He may be well advised to seek consideration of the knotty problem from his insurance group (they probably have an interest) or other counsel--

Personally I'd be afraid to ask insurance people.....that alone could open the can.

My point is get someone close and knowledgeable and off-forum (but Shaun armed with forum input)--before he finds out he's not insured! And, etc.

I think I can let it be the way it is. Could of been a lost title and they bases it off the dauntless V6 for the 1966 yr. the firewall states MD and title says jeep Willy 1966. I believe Kaiser took over in 65 so Willy wouldn't be on the title. I may make it into a military style OD green M38a1 for its own piece of mind. Title may say another and has been for yrs, but I'll bring back its old glory look, or at least similar for a resto-mod. Appreciate all the support.

Im realy doing all this for my knowledge and what I plan for the jeep. I really dont want to get into changing number and what not because like you mentioned, it could open a can of worms and may not get to enjoy the jeep, yet on the other hand it could correct the issues, but im not willing to do so. I know, we know what it is at this point. Thanks again gents..

My MB was titled as a '46. They didn't make them in that year so it must have been the year it was sold to a civilian. I swapped in a V6 and never had any insurance issues. I never had to file a claim either. I think I may know where an old registration slip may be with the vin but it would take over an hour to dig my way through that shed to get to an old steamer trunk. Also, there would be no reason to do it other than to let me know the actual year of the vehicile that I sold back in the "70s

Did I read it right, that you said the number on the title is stamped on the frame? If it is I would say for the most part you shouldn't have anything to even worry about. Especially since you have the title for it since that means some official already approved it as is.

no, I thought they were numbers but after cleaning it off it was really nothing. Im working in the snow and cold up here in Ohio so lets say it not going as fast and daily as i hoped. I can not find any numbers on the frame at all. I checked the engine but the tab has fallen off, it was not mounted to block.

I have a '62 CJ-5 with the plate intact. The "VIN" is actually referred to as a Serial # on the plate. The first five digits are 57548, as discussed in here and the next two digits are 14, and then four more digits after that. Then after that there is a large list of patent numbers.

I agree. My 62 Cj5 also has the data plate attached and it shows 57548 144xxx. The frame is stamped on the passenger side with the same last 6 numbers as the data plate. The TXDMV also agreed that it's manufacture date would have been February 1962. I bought it last October with a screwed up title from Colorado but it was easier for me to just tell them there was no title and had the Sheriffs Dept run the Serial numbers to verify it was not stolen. The numbers corresponded and I was issued a bonded title and tags.

That's strange... According to what I have read, the T-98 tranny option, which I have, was not offered until the very end of 1962. I determined that mine was made in November of '62. Not a big deal. Just seems weird, but then Jeeps are a strange animal, anyway.
