Hi guys, i just finished to redo all my aux wiring on my jeep.

I notice on the cluster that there an indicator " 4 wheel drive ".

I know that cj dana 20 don't use it oem.

But i like to know if i can make it fonctionnal?

On the dana 20, there is two hole that can accept some king of ball switch.
I have a spare t18 with the back up switch on it and i tried it on the dana 20. I'm only able to do 1.5 turn before it stop.

So does any have any idea to make it work and where can i source the right swtich for the dana 20?

I'm sure there was nothing like that in 1975.

In 1976, Jeep introduced the CJ-7 with the optional automatic and Quadratrac, and I expect it was functional in those Jeeps. Look at the '76 wiring diagram (section 22 here http://oljeep.com/edge_76_tsm.html ) and you will see that 56 orange goes from the emergency drive light (locked 4x4) to the Quadratrac transfer case.

There were earlier Dana 20s that had some king of switch, but I am not sure what that was. You could try a switch from a T-14 or T-15 - maybe that will fit. Standard NS20.

Just found something on other forum, it seem that napa back up switch NS6566 is suppose to work on the dana 20. It will need some custom wiring but it not a problem for me.
Also i have a spare t18-dana 20 from a fsj. It's the same shifter linkage as the one on my jeep right now. I took off the rubber plug over the front shift rail. I can put my little finder all the way in the hole and i feel the a difference in height on the shift rail while i change the t-case position (4l, 2h, 4h).

Here a pic that the guy posted with this ballswitch.

I ordered it today witht the connector, so suppose to get in tomorow, i will be able to do some test on my spare set-up with a multimeter. I'll be back with the result soon, it may help some with their dana 20.

My 64 Wagoneer had both a 4wd and a Neutral indicators with a Dana 20. The switches were different then the one in your picture.

Yes, the switch on the picture is for a 90-99 chevy cavalier that give a contact between the two pin. The one you have must be the one with a lonely pin without the plastic thing for the connector. Like i said i found this info on another forum and there wasn't any feedback on the post if it was working or not. If if don't work i will just return it to napa. If it work i think that will solve a problem for many cj owner that like to make the "4 wheel drive " indicator working.

Actually it looked like this. The picture is a brake light switch but the Wagoneer shift switches had conectors like that.

If you can use the Cavalier switch, I'd suggest you go with that. The push-on connector that Rralphs shows is very unreliable, in my experience. You may be able to find a connector that works with the Cavalier switch at the junkyard.

I already ordered the connector for it, so both the switch and connector will be brand new, will be here tomorow :)

The factory switches on the 20 and 300 transfer cases used the switch that Rralphs shows and also the single pole connector Johnnyboy03 talks about. Depends on year and application. There are also some switches that are similar that had a lock nut with a longer threaded portion that you could adjust. The shift rails should be machined for the switch already. The depth the switch threads in is very important. Too deep and the shift rails won't move.

Yes seem to be, i put my finger in the hole and i feel the machined part. the machined surface seem to be when we are in 2h, when in 4l and 4h there no machined surface so it must push on the ball switch.

Yes, when the ball is pushed that is what closes the switch. On the single wire units it simply grounds the wire through the transfer case to the chassis.

So i receive this morning the Ns6566 ball switch. Put it in the t-case, with the use of a continous tester i can say it's the right switch that goes there. No need of spacer just srew it all the way down and it's work perfectly. With the tester i got a contact on 4h and 4l and no contact on neutral and 2h. So this will be my week-end project. With the waterproof connector it will be perfect.

Hope it will help other that like to make the indicator " 4 wheel drive " working :)

On the picture the Ns6566 switch is the upper one, the lower one is the back-up switch for the T18. The T18 switch doesn't work on the case, there is not enought thread for the ball to be in contact with the shift rail.

Sounds like a fun feature, and easy to add if you have the cluster with the 4x4 light. You'll also need the socket that goes into the cluster. I expect it has a cap now, if the light is not being used.

What's the PN for the connector?

You might want to use a 24v bulb so driving in 4 wheel is not like driving toward someone with their high beams on.

Nice! That would be cool on my CJ, but I have the D18. Different I imagine.
