    Hello!

    Eric from PDX here, 72 CJ5/4.2 L6/D20/T18.

So, I keep meaning to pull my head out of this hood/dash/chassis/my own rear end and share some of the 9 million photos I've been wanting to share about this rebuild, but I keep finding more things that need attention in the aforementioned areas and getting distracted. Oh, and I had emergent back surgery, so there's that.

What I've done so far, in making this a cool, close-to-original-but-functional daily driver:
    New seats and bracket
Removed engine, replaced all seals and gaskets
    New clutch
New thermostat (previous owner installed his BACKWARDS)
New grounds. Like seriously badass battery-chassis-engine-firewall-dashboard heavy-duty grounds.
    Wheels and tires
Little knobs and other replacement things
    E-brake linkage

Since I was battling electrical gremlins and wanted to install a discreet Kicker faceless BT stereo behind the dash, and because they had a rebate, I decided to put in the Painless wiring harness with fuse block. The thing kicks serious butt, if you don't mind going non-original, and I've really enjoyed the process. My questions stem from--I think?!?--the fact that my Jeep is a 1972. I imagine that some old stock was used in production, so I have kind of a mishmash of Motorola charging system, BID ingition system, hand pump windshield washer, totally bizarre heater controls, and weird headlight switch. Some might have been from the old boy I bought it from (original owner), but there's just enough that I think it's just kinda a weird production time...

    1) Has anyone had this particular experience with mismatched parts on "in-between" or "newborn" years?
    2) The damned hazard switch: pour poles (LF, RF, LR, RR--have to be through-wired and can't conjoin signals), on-off. Can't find these anywhere. Thoughts?
    3) Should I just bite and put in an electric washer kit? I'm wired for it now, by default. My hand pump needs rebuilding, and they're apparently made of unobtainium.

Thank you all so much for your time.

    E

Hey mod--meant to put this in the "Intermediate Tech" section. My apologies.

BID did not exist in 1972, so it was swapped in. Motorola regulator and alternator is right. You should have an electrical washer pump.

The "Frankenjeep" is a common occurrence ... just sort it out and make it work. Pics of your parts would be helpful.

If you are going with a Painless harness, you can use any generic flasher switch that you want. You have to follow the Painless wiring diagram. The trick will be making the turn signal switch work with the Painless diagram.

My 72 (built Oct 71) also had a hand pump windshield washer. I replaced it with an electric from a later CJ

I pulled about 50 feet of wire out from under my dash when I re-did it. "Incremental build-out" led to dead end wires, dual power sources when only one was needed, "T" splices everywhere, wiring too small for the current draw, some wiring much too large for the current draw (#8 wire on a gauge light), etc. I wish you luck. I just was happy to have a very long background in electricity and electronics.

You aren't kidding. Thanks to my forebears on here, however, the Sparton SCS-3R mysteries are a little more accessible.
