Ive read about 20-25 threads about drum removal and it seems that theres a few different types. Still not sure if I have it right. Renting a puller, behind the hub, removing the pin, loosening the bolt, etc.

I have a stock 62 with the 3 screws on the face of the drum. My understanding is that all I need to do is remove the 3 screws and the drum should come off unless its rusted/stuck to the hub face. Correct? The screws came out fairly easily.

    Heres a couple photos.

From what Im gathering its just the 3 screws on this model. Do I need to knock off the dust cap, remove the pin, remove bolt?

    Thanks again for the info.

Smack it hard with a BFH right between the studs, on the flat face where the screws were. Drum should pop loose, assuming it's not rusted to the brake shoes. May help to back off the brake shoe adjusters.

Back off the shoes, they wear and form a lip in the drum. Then apply bfh

Thanks guys, I know this is elementary to some but how do I go about "backing off" the brakes? I don't see anyway to adjust them, I know some have a slot in the backing plate to access the adjuster star, but I don't see it on these.

behind the drum at the bottom of the backing plate there should be a slot. it may have a rubber grommet stuck in there. use a screwdriver or ideally a brake adjusting spoon to turn the star one way or another to loosen the pressure on the shoes against the drums. then hit it with a BFH. it may not want to come off all nice. you may have to mess around with it for a while until it does. Your drum will come off without the hub since you have a dana 44 axle. enjoy.

Yes, it has 2 bolts coming through the backing plate I assume are b, k, l, and m. I have loosened those up, one actually dropped inside the drum. Maybe I need a bigger BFH.

You don't need to remove them, only loosen the locknut and rotate the stud slightly.

A FSM would show you how exactly, because the effect of rotation is opposite on the left and right sides of each backplate.

Thanks PeteL, I'll check it out. Wish I wouldn't of removed the nut on the one side. Maybe I'll try and get a flat screwdriver in there. Thanks again.

If it fell in, the shoe will be slacked off. Just retrieve the stud/cam after the drum is off.

You will be able to tell "loose" from "tight" if you rotate the drum as you turn the stud slightly.

(The diagram I linked is for an earlier military type, yours will be very slighty different.)

Some times if you heat the drum between the studs with a torch you don't need a bfh, just a medium bfh, when you hit it. Rick

I have a "hammer" bit for my air hammer. I place that between the studs and trigger for about 5 sec. Then move to the next stud and so on until the drum is loose. If you have an air hammer with other bits, you can get a piece of scrap steel and drill a small pilot hole in the face that the air punch can sit in and use it like a small hammer. Just get a lot more "swings" in a much shorter time!

Since you have the nut loose it looks like you plan on pulling the hub too. Why not pull it first then you should be able to support the drum and carefully drive the hub off of it.

Well, Id rather just get the drum off. I wasn't sure if it would help to loosen the axle nut, trying to keep it simple. Anyone have a photo of a drum like this off? I don't see how it will come off with just the 3 screws.
    Thanks

You may have to get a drum puller and pull the whole thing as glen said.

It appears you pounded on the wrong area and have peened the hub lip over onto the drum.

Personally I pound on the 'crown' or edge of the drum, not where everyone else is suggesting...

The cast iron of a brake drum can be easily cracked or the drum distorted.

X2. If replacing the drum that's fine but dangerous if re-use is planned.

i always hit on the flat face for above reasons. If it doesn't come loose after a couple whacks, i would have gotten out a torch an heated the flat face as hot as i could. All i have is propane with no O2, so there it can only get so hot. It seems to do the job when i need it to. I have seen mechanics get a drum cherry hot to pull it off when every other option failed.

Loosening the nut doesn't help anything in this case. The drum is simply stuck/corroded on there. You might try lightly tapping on the three heavy flat spots on the outer area of the drum, just don't distort it as mentioned. How big of a hammer do you have? You need a 3 lb hammer to do the job right.
