Tips for M416 Trailer Lights

    I'm wiring up the trailer lights on an M416 trailer, but I don't really know how these military lights are supposed to be wired. The left and right lights are identical, with a split lens. Each one has a "Big Red Eye" on the top and a rectangular lens on the bottom. When you take the lens off the body of the housing it has three bulbs in it. Two of the bulbs are on the top of a sheet metal shield in back of the "Big Red Eye" and there is another bulb on the bottom of the sheet metal shield in back of the bottom rectangular lens. In the picture I have labeled these bulbs as A, B, C. Each of the three sockets has one wire going to one contact in the bottom of the socket.

    What is the purpose of the split lens?
    Which bulb is for running lights, which for turn signals and brakes, and what is the other one for?
    Above the right light there is another smaller diameter light with a rectangular lens. What is this one for?

    Essentially your "big red eye" has the DoT required tail & stop lights for regular highway use, the "bottom rectangle" is the military spec blackout stop light & "small light" is the blackout convoy light (to maintain correct distance between vehicles at night- tail lights not allowed to be illuminated).

    There should be metal tags on the wires coming out of the lamp housing, somewhere on the net there's a chart telling what wire goes to which bulb.

    You can get a solid red lens, I think the Gamma Goat had them. I have a set for my trailer. Kind of expensive, but worth it IMO. No need for the blackout light setup and the full red lens cool. Here is a link to a thread with a picture. Midwest Military website seems to be down?

    Edit: for a trailer where you don't have the hole in the body, the composite lights would be cool. And brand new for less than the Gama Goat lens!

    Cool. Website is working again! On the last or next to last page of the A1 parts they have an early round light rebuild kit for $28. Looks like all the guts included.
