A local cop (wrangler enthusiast) was hassling me to the point of threatening to impound my 51 Cj3a bc I don't have a roll bar.

Does anybody have a link to some literature indicating that these didn't come with a roll bar? I would like to go talk to his supervisor before I get to the point of an impound and a court battle.

    Much appreciated!

Did you ask him what law requires a rollbar on a vehicle of that vintage? One that did not come from the factory with one?
Sounds like he's on a power trip and not knowledgeable about older vehicles and/or the laws regarding vintage vehicles.

He is very much on a power trip, has been for a decade. His father used to deal in jeep parts but they were all mid 70s and newer. He fancies himself an expert and dismissed it when I twice told him 51s did NOT come with a roll bar.

A close friend is a sergeant with the state police and she couldn't find any statutes requiring a roll bar. Or stating that the lack of a roll bar made it "unsafe" which is the grounds he was claiming when threatening to impound.

So far I found this: http://www.angelfire.com/ca5/TheDuck/jeepid.html

No Jeep came with a roll bar prior to the 1970 (?) Renegade 1. Jeep sold roll bars through the dealer parts network, but they did not appear on the option list until 1974. Then it was years before they became standard, much less mandatory.

1974 factory literature - http://www.earlycj5.net/forums/showthread.php?86060-1974-sales-brochure-(CJ-5) - the first year for the optional roll bar. These Jeeps were and are 50-states compliant without a roll bar. I worked for a Jeep dealer in 1974. I know this for a fact.

My 1975 CJ-6 was delivered without a roll bar. It's fully compliant.

Look here - there are many many sales brochures that show Jeeps without roll bars - https://www.google.com/search?q=ear...jfsASI2ILoDw&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAQ&biw=1289&bih=922

Give him your lawyer's card, and ask him if he wants to take it to court. I'm sure there are at least a dozen people here who will swear that these Jeeps were delivered fully compliant with all state and local laws without a roll bar.

Tell him to cite you for "No rollbar". Let the judge sort him out.

Yeah, but they can cite you for standing on the sidewalk, and will, if they choose to.

This guy is itching to tow my jeep. If he sees me he'll tow it, no doubt about it. Yeah, I'll fight the ticket and win. But I don't want to have to walk home, pay the impound fee, and take a day off of work to fight the ticket.

How often do people get their impound fee back even when they win their case? My guess is very rarely. I suppose I could try to take the township to small claims court but who knows if that's even possible...

I'd rather take pages of info to the chief and tell him to leash his dogs.

Years ago I had a problem with a LEO and found the factory service manual to be helpful as well in showing what was 'stock'. Kinda hard for them to say it's not when it's in the factory service manual that way as well.

Might want to pick up a copy for your year.

What are QQ license plates?? Are they antique auto plates?

In Colorado, Oregon, and Washington those have serious restrictions. If one wants to "wheel" his CJ he can not do it with these plates. Parades and "meets" are OK. Daily driving is not.

Please keep in mind he is being hassled by one local LEO. It is obviously his DD, so antique plate are out!

I also recommend talking to his supervisor about the harassment, or " hassle" if you prefer. Having had to deal with a similar issue before, I will tell you this worked well for me. That particular LEO left me strictly alone after I talked to his supervisor.

The one time I had a vehicle impounded, it was done illegally, and the town paid for the towing and storage. When I threatened to sue them, they paid me $500.00 to settle out of court.

You need to do something or you will not enjoy driving the jeep.

I didn't see it was his daily driver. In NJ you can register it as a collector car, the only restriction is a 3000 mile a yr limt. Not good for daily driver.

Not my daily driver, but driven whenever it's nice out.

I'll take my chances. If they impound it, I'll see them in court.

    There ya go!!

My mistake about the DD. Sorry.

My guess is that you will drive it more than 3000 mile a year though.

I would get a dash came or GoPro...so the next time the little punk pulls you over you can record it all. Also, ask for a watch sargent/captain....then have him try to explain it all in front of him.

If you can I'd go in and talk to his supervisor and explain the situation. That gets it on record, or should, and let's the supervisor know this nonsense is going on. He/She may not even be aware of it.

    :iagree:

Assuming your local police force is at a more professional level than that found in chainsawguymassacre movies then your PD should not want it's memebers acting in a capricious manor, it's bad for their image & can lead to $$$ lawsuits against them.

So a town councilman frequents the same bar as me and I ran into him yesterday. He told me exactly who to ask for at the PD as there is no chief at the moment.

I have passed several cops recently without incident but haven't seen the cop with the power trip yet.

I've driven about 400 miles in the last 3 weeks so I would absolutely pass the 3000 mile limit NJ puts on classic cars.
