i installed disk brakes on my dana 25 and had no problems.

I'm not in a real hurry. I'm leaving in 6 days to go elk hunting in Montana so it can wait until I get back. It's something I plan to do on winter days when I fire up the wood stove in my shop.

I bought 4 back plates from a mid 70's blazer and the calipers for the core value. A buddy who get parts for wholesale prices is going to get some 1977 CJ rotors, calipers, hoses, studs, etc for me at a price that will help my budget. I also recently bought a clutch/brake pedal assembly with the booster, master cyls, etc out of a 1989 Cherokee. All the used parts I'm getting from guys parting out rigs and selling parts via craigslist. The junk yards here in Oregon want ridiculous prices for used parts. I'm getting the same parts from craigslist for 20% of what I was quoted by junkyards.

I'm taking some pics so eventually I'll show what I'm doing. It's pretty cool to be able to read what other guys are doing to modify and upgrade their jeeps. I'm getting some great ideas here. I remember when I did a restore/conversion on a 56 Willys pick up before the internet this kind of information wasn't so availlable.

Does the frame mounted MC need to be upgraded when doing the disc conversion?

 

it is best to convert to a dual reservoir master cylinder when you go with disk conversion.
depending on the master cylinder you might have to add a inline residual pressure valve and or a proportioning valve.

can you do it with single yes.... but highly recommended to switch the master cylinder.

 

Absolutely.........First off Disc brake calipers need more fluid volume to operate..........assuming you still have the single reservoir and as piffy mentioned you do need the split reservoir.......also you need the correct one that services Disc's and drums as some are stepped bored cause disc's also require a higher pressure to work.........residual pressure valve and proportioning valve also as Piff mentioned..........although the correct Master may already have the residual valves built-in..........R&P 4WD has a kit for that as will as Herm the overdrive man.

 

Will Hunt-If you already have 11" brakes then start by changing out your master cylinder. Check out the kit from R&P as it is the only one that actually works well and is a true bolt-in kit. You will need to change master cylinders anyway if going to disks. Much better to change one part at a time so you will know where to focus if something doesn't go right. You may find out that the 11" brakes work just fine once you have a master with enough volume to push the bigger cylinders.

 

just a fyi Nightstr already did the conversion, this post was last year. I looked twice at the date myself, either way the explanation is always great.
His jeep came with a Factory dual master cylinder. He did add a proportioning valve, I don't recall if he did anything with the residual valves in the stock master cylinder.
