So there are 7 people for 6 volts and 15 people for 12 volts....since 6 volts is half of 12 volts it only stands to reason that only half the people would be required for a tie.

Be greener...use less volts! Like using less water...Right?

if you want to stay with 6v and not have to switch all the bulbs/gauges to 12, there is a company that makes a 6v conversion for the gm 1 wire alternators. get the better charging of an alt but get to stay 6v.

But then you loose the cool factor of the generator.

and I believe there is another company that will convert a generator into an alternator so no one would be the wiser...

except in this case your using twice the amperage as a 12 volt system. Kinda like putting a campfire out with a garden hose vs firehose;)

I don't know. I drug miles of synthetic garden hose around the mountains in the act of putting out smoldering ashes from forest fires as well as CJRL 1 and 1.5, nozzles, wyes, and hiked p•ss pumps all over as well . Bigger hoses just drained the relay tanks faster...
So stirring the ash pit some more- - don't you need heavier wires to carry more amps... I had a lot of melted spaghetti from my PO engine-uity on some pretty thin runs... Can't say how it happened and that it is 12v, but still... I say go for common unless you have a perfect restoration under way.

You can run as many amps as you want thru a piece of wire. Just a matter of how long it will flow.
Guess I shoulda said with the garden hose its the psi compared to amperage instead of comparing it to a firehose. A couple psi just trickles out or 1000psi that hose won't be around very long;)

I bought my 48 CJ-2A with an 8v battery and would not hesitate to stay that way. Not enough to hurt anything yet gains a couple volts to spin the starter faster.

Well, I have done two 8 Volt convertions. One on a '64 VW Baja, the other a '55 D-2 Catterpiller with positive ground. The Cat is now twelve Volts, negative ground, and the VW is still 8 Volts.

I would not do this again. It works, but there are several problems that come up with this set up. For one none of the modern accesaries will work. For a second it is hard to find 8Volt battery chargers. Third, jump starting with 12 Volts is dangerous, as is jumping with 6 Volts.

Since you are going to install a new system at this point, I recemend a 12 Volt systm. The one-wire alternator will put out enough amperage to power almost any accesary you want it to. The only reason to go with a 6 Volt system would be to show this rig. It does not sound like that is your plans.

    IHTH, Matt W.

Plus 8 volt batteries are expensive.

I'm running 6 volts on my 49 with a 6v single wire alternator. I love that system and would never change it. But that jeep is all original and didn't want to upgrade it (other than the troublesome generator). I'm running 12v on my 53 and like it too. More of a personal preference.
