Well I got another CJ2a to put together. Traded the slant 4cyl for the Willys.

Grill, windshield w/the window brackets, three radiators, fenders, horn, steering wheel and column, battery tray, extra springs, trans/t-case, skid plate etc.

Picking up the tub, hood and hopefully a 15gal military gas tank next week.

I used to think that too, until I saw this one. Now, I think I'd like to add to that quote,......."unless you live in the desert."
Nice score. I'd love to find a tub like that.

I know. Unbelievable how the stuff here just does not rust (Me being from Fla). You should see the old cars here, awesome.

Picking it up on Saturday, had to wait for a trailer.

What is wrong with this picture, and, can it be fixed.

Never seen this setup before and can some one explain/where to get the parts to fix this hub?

    Thanks,
    Jim

Dualmatic. Fix? Did you try to work it? I suspect it's not broken.

The bottom picture is the factory flange. That's how they came from the factory. Locking hubs were installed by the dealer or owner.

    Notice the "L" for left-handed! ;)

Yep, Dualmatic. If the shell/cam mechanism is missing on the one side, I suspect you will have to find a whole hub for replacement. But at that point, if it was mine, the remaining complete hub would be in the classified and a set of Warns would be going on it.

They do work, and as long as you keep the Jeep stock, they are adequate. However, big tires and an engine transplant make them into little exploding bombs. Up-side is they usually (but not always) blow up before the spiders in the D25/D27's.

So that is a locking hub from the factory, Hum.

How does it work? Do you pull out those bars or ?

Yes I don't have the second one-so I guess I will pull it and sell it/the other. What asking price should I ask IF anyone wants one.

I was thinking of putting the other axle in (last pic) as it looks better but I still have to check the internals.

At least I can make one good '48 from two and sell the other '48 parts/axles/trans/t-case.

    Thanks,
    Jim

    No. Please read again.

The Dualmatic is an aftermarket hub, just like Warn.

No Jeep came from the factory with locking hubs until 1974.

The bottom picture shows a hub flange with its dust cap. That's not a locking hub. It's just a flange - a chunk of steel with no moving parts.

Re the Dualmatic, you pull the bars out, rotate them 180 degrees and put them back. Notice the bar is stamped "free" - the opposite slide of the bar will be stamped "lock" or some such.

If you just have one, I suggest you put it up for sale - somebody might want it for parts or to replace a broken one. Sell it cheap or give it away. Consider it Jeep-karma maintenance.

    Thank you.

So the original one in the third pic (hub) is not locked-the rear is a open rear then? I thought they were locked and putting it in 4wd then both wheels were pulling.

Do you have a part number that would fit this hub?

    Thanks,
    Jim

The one in the third picture is called a drive flange, they were, stock on Jeeps until 1971 as Tim said.
If you have drive flanges on, the front axle gear assembly is always turning while you drive.
The other hub, the Dualmatic is the selectable hub. They were made in Longmont CO back in the '60's.

How are you planning to use this Jeep, off road or on the street?

    Thank you.

I plan on making one good Willy's out of the two and maybe selling off the other as parts for those in need.

I want to use this as off-road and I don't mind it being a DDriver around town. SO it will get a lot of use.

Chebby 350/T98/T18 and the stock axles-gearing.

So if I need locking/unlocking hubs-what is the part number I need-if not then the T-case will be in "N" to the front axle (but it will still spin).

You don't need locking hubs ... they are more in the "nice to have" category. Use the flanges and put the Jeep in 2WD - you can daily drive all you want with no damage. The front axle will turn with the wheels, but not be driven.

If you want to buy locking hubs, get some for 10 spline axles. I don't know if Warn makes new hubs any more for your axle, but Mile Marker does. http://www.quadratec.com/products/26100_000.htm You could also look for some used ones.

    Thank you.

Now looking at the two front shackles.

The one on the left looks good but the one on the right has walked out.

    Does that mean it's shot?

What would you replace it with keeping the stock length.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Are these worth replacing w/NOS or should I just put after market on seeing I will have a v8 in the engine bay.

Not sure if they will hold up. I am keeping the stock tires/width.

    Thanks,
    Jim

    The factory shackles are fine.

The shackle may be ok, but the spring pack is splayed out due to the spring-over and maybe missing spring clips. Likely becasue of bad suspension geometry due to teh spring-over.

You understand that the spring-over is not factory? You can see the factory spring pads on the bottom of the axles. Normally the springs go under the axles. That's a hillbilly mod to get more ride height (a "lift").

Agreed and I will not do SO application-the guy has some shims under it as well and they are cocked as well. I'll look into the shackle.
I have other sets of springs that came w/the Jeep :)

    Thank you,

    1. Question, are these tires ok for wet pavement ? Easy coast rain?

Are they good in mud etc?

    2. Question, where can one find these?

    3. Question, will 9" tires fit these rims?

    Thanks,
    Jim
