You can do the same with the F-head, and you can port the intake and runners. I'm still not understanding how you can get more power out of the flat head than the F-head.

There is also a 2bbl carb kit available. I think it fits both the L and F heads. A company also makes a header for the L and F heads.

who makes the headers? i already have the 2bbl and intake manifold for my f head. not sure it would be worth putting it on without headers.

To pare it down, Clifford Performance. Their motto is 6=8. They do a lot with and for 6 and 4 cylinder engines.

And they dream a lot and smoke funny cigarettes? Yes, there are a number of avenues for bumping the power in 134's (and other generally low performance engines), small bumps that cost increasingly large sums for returns on investment. Even if you could double the torque in a F head, a bone stock sbc of just about any displacement would tear it in half.

My point was that Clifford was the company that was shown in the link and that they offered performance parts for 4 and 6 cylinder engines that few if any other companies offer. Not that an F or L head would equal a V-8.

Because back in the day companies were making racing heads and carbs and even intakes for the Willys 4banger.
They still show up on Ebay every once in a while.

But the intake flow of the F head is and always will be more efficient than the L head. Even with the aftermarket parts available "back in the day" for the L head.
    Can't change basic physics.

The problem with the F-Head vs the flathead is you are stuck with that single intake spot for mounting a 1 or 2 barrel carb.
With the flathead you could mount one, two or four carbs, and there were manifold readily available for doing so.
Wasn't unusual for a flathead four to have the same horsepower and torque as an inline six.
And with the sparkplug centered over the piston, you could weld in most of that area, leaving a small chamber for the air/fuel mixture, raising the compression ratio and the horsepower. Which they did do!

    Hi Everyone,
I gotta ask a stupid question here. Why would anybody wanna get an early model jeep up to these kinds of speeds anyway??...I have never had mine (1965 CJ5) out of second gear (plow Jeep) and my 1960 Willys truck I have never gotten out of second gear either (lawn ornament type truck) but I have to tell you compared to my daily driver ('99 S10 truck). These old vehicles are not safe and appear to be a handfull to drive. I would if it were me just drive on secondary roads. It is an old vehicle...like anything old..it is gotta be driven slow.
    Just my 2 cents

They are safe, if you drive smartly. You just gotta anticipate other peoples moves and be aware of everything. I've driven my '53 on 200 mile round trips and it is perfectly fine. This year, I might even be taking it down to PA for the willys picnic. I guess it takes more thinking to drive a classic vehicle on modern roads than modern vehicles. But yeah, I wouldn't want to go past 60-65 with my jeep.

My F-head is driven daily at 55MPH. it is always nice to have a few more ponies.

It is a blast to drive. I look forward to the ride to & from work!

another advantage for the flattop is the lack of valvetrain, a 2" intake sure does sound good but it is the same mass as a mopar bigblock valve and most of it is setting in the exhaust passage, not over the piston.
with that massive valve and a 12" long pushrod, valve float is a problem, and bigger springs won't do any good if the pushrod wants to fold under the pressure... of course you want to say beef up the rod but that just makes the valvetrain mass issue worse,
if the flat head has valve float you can use the stiffest spring and fastest ramp you dare,
and large valves don't always flow better, they just get shrouded and in the way as the air must go farther around it
the air in the flat head is already making a 90* turn through the valve so just direct it to the piston, without blocking it.

but you still can't do much with that 2lb connecting rod, or the 3 mains,
but look into the flathead ford stuff for ideas, they have most of the same problems.

fastest i got the F-134 was 65mph, and it took a while to get there, but i blame a stiff tailwind, 65psi in the 8pyl tires, some 93 octane (almost empty gotta cut that weight), a holley carb, and mild insanity. the good news is you can't get a speeding ticket, (even if you try)

No, see, you have that the other way around.
The S-10 is the unsafe vehicle, because it allows you to go so fast.
Ya gots to slow down and enjoy the scenery, don't you know!

Smell the Roses, Look at the girls, that kinda thing.
Leave a little earlier, go slower and live longer.

Maybe Mine is just especially tight, but I got mine over 60 according to the speedo and it felt just fine. A little cold with no windshield in February in Wisconsin, but no stability issues!

I did not buy mine to go fast.
I bought mine to go places!
And there are a lot of places in Arizona and Nevada, that you can not get to unless you ride a horse. . . . or drive one of these old jeeps.
At 5 foot wide they will go a lot of place the new stuff won't fit at all.

One guy said I was short.
When I asked for a second opinion he said my mother dressed me funny.
    Go figure!
